The history of TTC bus service on Markham Road begins on September 5, 1961 when service started on a branch of the 86 SCARBORO bus. On this day, the 86E branch began, operating from the Churchill Heights area between Lawrence and Ellesmere south to Kingston Road and southwest to Bingham loop. On May 11, 1968, service was diverted along St. Clair Avenue to Warden station on the BLOOR-DANFORTH subway line, and extended north to Progress Avenue. This continued until October 16, 1976, when the branch was broken off and given its own route number.

October 17 1976

Service begins on the new 102 MARKHAM ROAD route, operating from Warden station on the BLOOR-DANFORTH subway, replacing the 86E branch of the 86 SCARBORO bus. Buses run from Bay 7 at Warden station via east on St. Clair, northeast on Kingston Road and north on Markham Road to Finch Avenue, looping clockwise in an off-street loop at the northeast corner. Buses return south via the reverse route. This service operates Monday through Friday during rush hours and midday. At other times, buses operate only as far as Progress Avenue, looping clockwise via Estate Drive and then east on Progress to Markham. Additional rush hour service is provided via this branch as well.

This route is based out of Birchmount Garage.
