Yonge Street rapidway - Newmarket:
Final paving starts September 30

Metrolinx and York Region contractors continue the project to build a rapidway — bus-only lanes in the centre of the roadway — along Yonge Street in Newmarket between Davis Drive and Sawmill Valley Drive / Savage Road.

Crews are putting the final touches on Yonge Street in Newmarket for the vivaNext rapidway construction project. Over the past few weeks, they’ve been preparing the roadway for final paving. Starting Monday, September 30, they’ll pave the north- and southbound traffic lanes.

First, the crews pave northbound traffic lanes between south of Savage Road and Davis Drive. Then they pave southbound traffic lanes between Davis Drive and Sawmill Valley Drive.

To accommodate this work, they’ll set up work zones that restrict traffic to just one lane in each direction. Intersections with traffic signals will remain open as crews pave the traffic lanes. However, the work zone may temporarily restrict access to mid-block driveways.

After each paving operation, crews repaint traffic lines and reopen lanes after the new asphalt has cooled.

Crews work 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. every day.

“Paid-duty’ York Regional Police officers will be on-site to control traffic.

After they finish this phase of the project, crews will pave side streets and then red asphalt in the centre-lane rapidways and the intersections.

York Region Transit may temporarily relocate bus stops near work zones. YRT passengers aboard buses along these routes can also expect delays:

  • Viva blue;
  • Viva blue “A”;
  • 96 Keele - Yonge;
  • 98 Yonge; and
  • 98E Yonge express.

Paving on between Davis and Savage / Sawmill Valley and the resulting YRT service changes continue “for approximately two weeks” or until about October 15.
