Metrolinx and York Region contractors continue building a rapidway — bus-only lanes in the centre of the roadway — along Highway 7 West, Centre and Bathurst Streets between Dufferin and Yonge Streets.

Since Sunday, September 22, riders have beeen able to board buses along York Region Transit’s Viva orange route at the new Bathurst & Highway 7 vivastation — on the Highway 7 / Bathurst connector road — and ride along the rapidway to Richmond Hill Centre Terminal.

The rapidway segment that opened Sunday includes:

  • 2.6‐kilometres of red partial rapidway on Highway 7 to Richmond Hill Centre Terminal.
  • The new vivastation on the connector road at Bathurst Street.
  • A “shared‐use” path for pedestrians and cyclists on both sides of Highway 7, the Highway 7 / Bathurst connecting road and the Highway 7 / Yonge connecting road.

For this segment, Viva buses travel on a “partial rapidway”, which means a dedicated eastbound bus lane on Highway 7 between the Highway 7 / Bathurst connecting road and the Highway 7 / Yonge connecting road and into Richmond Hill Centre Terminal. The Highway 7 / Bathurst connecting road includes rapidway lanes in both directions, with Viva buses stopping at the new Bathurst & Highway 7 vivastation.

In this section of Highway 7, the rapidway lane extends eastward only towards Richmond Hill Centre Terminal. This is due to several reasons, including property constraints, and conflicts with other infrastructure. Westbound buses operate in regular traffic lanes.

The Highway 7 West rapidway, in its entirety, adds 12.6 kilometres to the viva rapidway network in the City of Vaughan, linking two significant employment, recreation and residential centres (Vaughan Metropolitan Centre and Richmond Hill / Langstaff Urban Growth Centre) and connecting to the TTC’s Line 1 Yonge - University subway, GO Transit’s Richmond Hill train line, other YRT bus routes and park and ride lots.

vivaNext says, “The remaining 10 km of the project is progressing well, and is expected to open for service by the end of this year.”

The Highway 7 West project is a dedicated rapidway in both directions for most of the 12.6 kilometres, with a partial rapidway at three locations:

  • On Highway 7 between Bathurst and Yonge Streets for the Viva eastbound route to the Richmond Hill Centre Terminal;
  • On Bathurst Street over Highway 407 and Highway 7 for the Viva southbound route to Centre and the Promenade Terminal; and
  • On Centre Street under the Highway 407 bridge, between Highway 7 and Dufferin Street, for the Viva eastbound route to Vaughan Metropolitan Centre Station and TTC Line 1 subway.

Typical of other rapidways in York Region, this new segment includes a number of features to make the rapidway is easy for motorists to see, including paving it with red asphalt, putting in rumble strips along the edges and signs.
