Metrolinx and York Region contractors continue the project to build a rapidway — bus-only lanes in the centre of the roadway — along Yonge Street in Richmond Hill between 19th Avenue / Gamble Road and Highway 7.

From 9 p.m. Friday, September 6 until 9 a.m. Sunday, September 8, the City of Richmond Hill and the Region of York are closing

  • Yonge Street between Major Mackenzie Drive and Hopkins Street / Elmwood Avenue

to accommodate Metrolinx contractors whose crews are completing various construction activities for the project.

Crews maintain local access to properties in the closure area. Detour signs will be in place to guide motorists and pedestrians. Traffic-control personnel will be on-site during this phase of the project.

Expect noise, vibration and dust from equipment and trucks.

GO Transit is detouring buses along this route, while the street is closed:

(GO Transit has announced the buses are detouring, but has not confirmed exact detour-routing information. Since GO has confirmed that buses serve passengers at the stops on Yonge Street at Harding Boulevard East and Major Mackenzie Drive East at Cedar Street, but don’t stop on Yonge at Elmwood and Major Mackenzie, buses likely follow the same detour path as YRT buses.)

After 9 p.m. Friday, September 6, northbound buses operate along their regular route to Yonge Street and Elmwood Avenue / Hopkins Street, then detour:

westward along Hopkins;
northward along Addison Street; and then
eastward along Major Mackenzie Drive East to Yonge,
resuming their regular route eastward along Major Mackenzie East.

Northbound buses skip their regular stops

  • on Yonge Street at Elmwood Avenue and Major Mackenzie Drive East.
