Traffic-lane shift, signal activation

Metrolinx and York Region contractors continue building a rapidway — bus-only lanes in the centre of the roadway — along Highway 7 West, Centre and Bathurst Streets between Dufferin and Yonge Streets.

This week, as part of the project, crews are reconfiguring traffic lanes and activating signals

  • at the intersection of Bathurst Street with Flamingo Road.

Traffic shifts to the outer curb lanes which will allow for continued rapidway construction in the centre lanes.

Crews are also activating new traffic signals

  • at the intersection of Highway 7 with the Bathurst - Highway 7 Connector Road.

From 9:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, crews are painting new traffic lines

  • on Bathurst Street between north of Flamingo Road and north of Atkinson Avenue / New Westminster Drive.

Once they’ve finished painting the lines, they’ll reconfigure the traffic lanes, creating a centre median area just north and south of the intersection with Flamingo to accommodate more rapidway construction. The work zone restricts traffic to just one lane in each direction.

At they activate the new signals, the old traffic lights will be out of service intermittently, in all directions. Expect to see the lights out or flashing.

“Paid-duty” York Regional Police officers will be on-site during this work to control traffic. Once crews have activated the new signals, they’ll remove the old signal poles and equipment.

The centre median restricts access to or from Westmount Boulevard. The street will be “right-in / right-out” only at Bathurst. Mid-block left turns will no longer be possible. Once completed, Westmount Boulevard will be transformed into a right-in/right-out only. Midblock left turns will no longer be possible.

The Bathurst / Flamingo intersection have a dedicated left-turn traffic signal. Motorists can only turn left when the left-turn arrow is illuminated and left-turns are not permitted when through traffic proceeds. To access mid-block entrances on opposite sides of the road, U-turn at the intersection.

York Region Transit may temporarily relocate bus stops during the work. Passengers aboard buses along these routes can also expect delays:

  • Viva orange;
  • 23 Thornhill Woods; and
  • 88 Bathurst.
