Subway opens late -- 10 a.m., May 26:
St Clair to Union

The TTC is closing the Line 1 Yonge - University subway between St Clair and Union stations until 10 a.m. Sunday, May 26. Line 1 subway trains operate only between Finch and St Clair stations and between Vaughan Metropolitan Centre and Union stations until 10 a.m. that morning.

Closing this portion of the subway network allows TTC crews to continue upgrading the automatic train-control (or ATC) signal system. According to a TTC news release, “When ATC is fully installed on Line 1, it will provide a more modern and reliable signal system that will help the TTC improve capacity by allowing for increased trips on the line.”

Shuttle buses operate along Yonge Street to partially replace subway service until subway service resumes by 10 a.m. The buses drop off or pick up passengers at on-street stops near each of the station on the closed section of the subway line.

Most stations on this section of Line 1 remain open to passengers so you can pay for fares or connect with buses or streetcars. However, Summerhill and Wellesley stations are closed until 10 a.m.

Wheel-Trans accessible service is also available from any station. Speak with a TTC staff member for more information about the service and its frequency.

The TTC says, “While the TTC does most subway maintenance at the conclusion of service each night, it continues to require weekend and early weeknight closures to complete critical infrastructure and maintenance upgrades.”

The TTC originally planned to close this part of Line 1 all day Saturday, May 25 and Sunday, May 26. It has already closed parts of this section of the subway multiple times earlier this year:

The TTC has planned several more closures of all or part of this section of Line 1 this year:

  • Monday, May 27 until Thursday, May 30 — close early — Eglinton to Bloor — track maintenance.
  • Saturday, June 8 — Lawrence to Bloor — signal upgrades.
  • Sunday, June 9 — St. Clair to Union — signal upgrades.
  • Monday, June 17 until Wednesday, June 19 — close early — Eglinton to Bloor — track maintenance.
  • Monday, June 24 until Thursday, June 27 — close early — Eglinton to Bloor — track maintenance.
