GO revising fares, April 20

During its meeting of Wednesday, April 10, the Metrolinx board of directors approved changing GO Transit fares, starting Saturday, April 20.

GO is lowering fares for short-distance trips to $3.70, when you use a PRESTO fare-card. According to the transit agency, lowering fares “[makes] GO an even better option for travelling within and around your community.”

If you’re travelling 10 kilometres or less, your trip will cost you $3.70, instead of the current lowest PRESTO fare of $4.71. GO is also lowering the cost of single-fare paper tickets to $4.40 for trips 10 kilometres or less, instead of the current lowest ticket fare of $5.30. By lowering fares for these short trips, GO intends to attract more local riders, making the cost of a short trip aboard GO trains and buses more in line with other local transit options.

However, GO is also raising fares for longer-distance GO trips. PRESTO fares for trips longer than 10 kilometres increase by about four percent. For example, a PRESTO journey between Union Station and Barrie South GO Station increases from $12.40 to $12.82. The price of a single-fare paper ticket for trips longer than 10 kilometres increases by as much as 10 percent.

GO says, “Since the last fare increase in September 2017, we’ve grown services by 25 per cent, and we’re working hard to bring you even more — and better — services in the future. This increase will help cover the costs of providing quality service to our customers, which rise each year with inflation.”

The PRESTO discount on GO increases to 16 percent from the current 11 percent, when you compare it with the single-fare paper ticket price. With PRESTO, you also get automatic discounts when transferring between GO and local transit agencies, including the TTC.

GO is lowering fares for train trips to and from Niagara Falls and St. Catharines, so they align with bus fares for those locations.

The fare increase does not apply to the Union-Pearson express. This means that fares for UP Express and GO Transit will no longer be the same, and you’ll have to tap your PRESTO card on the device that corresponds with the train you’re taking. If you travel on UP you must tap your card on UP Express devices, and if you’re taking GO, you must tap your card on GO Transit devices.

If you’re travelling to or from Bloor or Weston and wish to take advantage of the discount when connecting with TTC or the GO loyalty program, you have the option of taking GO Transit. UP passengers travelling to and from Pearson airport continue to benefit from a discounted TTC fare when connecting between the two systems. (Generally, GO fares are now lower than UPX fares between these three stations.)
