TTC raising fares, April 1

During its meeting of Thursday, January 24, the Toronto Transit Commission approved the TTC’s 2019 operating budget. According to the TTC, the budget protects recent service improvements and adds 10 cents to most fare types, except the adult cash fare, starting Monday, April 1.

The TTC last increased the adult cash fare from $3 to $3.25 in January 2016.

The TTC says that “In developing the nearly $2.1 billion budget for conventional and Wheel Trans services, the TTC found $135 million in efficiencies and offsets without impacting service. In addition to the $26 million a fare increase will yield, the budget calls for an additional $22 million subsidy from the City of Toronto.

“This keeps the average fare increase over the last two years below the rate of inflation. Fares did not rise in 2018.

“The Board also approved the TTC’s $10.3 billion 2019-2028 capital budget that invests in longer-term projects to reduce crowding, keep the system in a state of good repair, improve accessibility, purchase new vehicles and build the Line 2 East Extension.”

The Toronto Transit Commission is the TTC’s board of directors. It oversees matters of policy and planning, building, maintaining and operating the TTC system and expanding its services and facilities.

Commissioners include City of Toronto councillors and members of the public.

The TTC considers passengers ages 20 to 64 as “adult” passengers.

Passengers 65 years or older are “senior” passengers.

Passengers 13 to 19 years are “youth” passengers.

Passengers younger than 13 years are “child” passengers. Children ride free of fare.
