No subway service, Kipling to Jane: April 14, 15

Kipling_to_Jane.jpg

The TTC is closing the Line 2 Bloor - Danforth subway between Kipling and Jane stations all day Saturday, April 14 and Sunday, April 15. Line 2 trains operate only between Jane and Kennedy Stations this weekend.

While this section of the subway is closed, TTC crews are upgrading and maintaining the tracks. All stations between Kipling and Jane are open for passengers to pay for fares or to connect with buses.

The TTC is operating shuttle buses to help replace subway service. The buses start and end their trips in the terminals at Kipling and Jane stations and stop on Bloor Street West near Islington, Royal York and Old Mill stations.

Wheel-Trans buses are also available for anyone requiring an accessible connection. Ask any TTC employee for Wheel-Trans service and more information about service frequency.

The TTC advises passengers travelling to Toronto Pearson International Airport during the closure to plan and ahead and add extra travel time to meet planes. Consider boarding UP Express trains to and from Dundas West TTC Station (Bloor UPX Station) or Union Station for airport trips.

This is the only time this year that the TTC is closing this section of the subway system.

Crews start working “around-the-clock” shortly after Friday subway service ends to make sure they finish the project before subway service starts again Monday morning. They’ll various tools and equipment, including work cars and hand-held power tools, rail saws, grinders and hammer drills.

During this closure, track staff are:

  • maintaining the tracks, including tamping inside the tunnel section west of Aberfoyle Crescent, during both nights;
  • replacing rail on the bridge between Montgomery Road and Aberfoyle Crescent during both days, with limited night activity if necessary.
  • tamping between Islington Station and Montgomery Road during the daytime.
  • tamping between Kipling and Islington stations Sunday night, if enough time is available.

Tamping helps maintain the ballast (or stone) foundation that secures the track in place and provides extra support to help trains pass more smoothly over the tracks. Crews can only tamp the ballast when subway trains are not operating.

The City of Torontois temporarily restricting parking

  • on Bloor Street West between Jane Street and Armadale Avenue

from 7 a.m. until 9 p.m. Saturday, April 14 and from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Sunday, April 15.

By restricting parking on this part of Bloor West, the City hopes to allow for a safe and efficient flow of shuttle buses near Jane Station.
