YRT raising fares, July 1

Last year, York Region council approved a two-year plan to adjust York Region Transit and Viva fares, July 1, 2015 and July 1, 2016. All cash fares remain at the current rate.

According to a region news release, “YRT/Viva has seen an increase in ridership over the past five years from 18.3 million in 2009 to 22.4 million in 2014, an increase of approximately 23 per cent. Fare changes offset rising operating costs and support the cost of delivering service to the growing ridership.”

The release continues, “YRT/Viva’s two-year fare adjustment update ensures balanced costs between riders and taxpayers and is consistent with other GTA transit systems. As a transit system servicing a large geographical area, significant transit investment is required to support growing ridership in one of Ontario’s fastest regions.”

Starting today, Canada Day, Friday, July 1, one-zone fares increase by:

  • 10 cents to $3.50 for adult passengers paying with PRESTO fare cards;
  • $1 to $35 for a book of ten adult tickets;
  • $1 to $27 for a book of ten student tickets;
  • $1 to $22 for a book of ten child or senior tickets;
  • $1 to $40 for a book of ten express tickets;
  • $4 to $140 for adult monthly pass;
  • $3 to $105 for a student monthly pass;
  • $2 to $59 for a child or senior monthly pass; and
  • $5 to $162 for a monthly express pass.

Two-zone fares increase by:
