YRT revises routes and services, August 31



York Region Transit is changing several of its routes and services, starting Sunday, August 31.

It’s extended the rapidway — bus-only lanes in the centre of the roadway — further east along Highway 7 between South Town Centre Boulevard / Town Centre Boulevard and Highway 404, increasing service for Viva buses operating along the Viva pink and Viva purple routes.

It’s introducing a new branch and increasing the frequency of service along the 20 Jane route.

It’s also resuming many of the extra services it provides to accommodate passengers traveling to and from local high schools.

Introducing a new route


204 Berczy GO shuttle

YRT is canceling four afternoon trips along the 42 Berczy route, it says, “to better accommodate GO train passengers”. It’s replacing the buses that usually leave Unionville GO Station at 5, 5:29, 6:03 and 6:43 p.m. Mondays to Fridays with service along this new GO shuttle route. Buses operate along the same path as when they operated along the 42 Berczy route.

Starting Tuesday, September 2, southbound buses leave Major Mackenzie Drive East west of Ridgecrest Road at 5:32, 6:01 and 6:35 p.m. Mondays to Fridays. They end their trips in Unionville GO Station bus terminal at 5:57, 6:20 and 7 p.m.

Northbound buses leave Unionville GO Station at 5, 5:29, 6:03 and 6:43 p.m. The arrive on Major Mackenzie East west of Ridgecrest at 5:30, 5:59, 6:33 and 7:13 p.m. The bus arriving at 7:13 p.m. continues southward along Ridgecrest to Bur Oak Avenue before ending its trip.

Introducing a new branch of a route


20 / 20A Jane

Starting Sunday, August 31, YRT introduces the new 20A branch of the route, providing direct service along Jane Street between Teston Road and Highway 7, without diverting buses onto other streets.

Buses serve the new branch Mondays to Fridays during rush hours and all day Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

Southbound buses start their trips on Mosque Gate at Teston Road, then proceed:

eastward along Teston;
southward along Jane Street;
eastward along Steeles Avenue West;
southward along Keele Street;
westward along York Boulevard (and construction detour); and then
northward along Ian Macdonald Boulevard to a stop across from Vanier Lane,
ending their trips.

Southbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at new stops

  • on Jane Street at Langstaff Road West, Applewood Crescent, Cidermill and Pennsylvania Avenues, Portage Parkway, Highway 7, across from Doughton Road and at Interchange Way.

Northbound buses start their trips in Ian Macdonald Boulevard across from Vanier Lane on York University’s Keele Campus, then proceed:

north- and westward along Ian Macdonald;
northward along Founders Road;
westward along Steeles Avenue West;
northward along Jane Street;
westward along Ahmadiyya Avenue; and then
northward along Mosque Gate to Teston Road,
ending their trips.

Northbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at new stops

  • on Jane Street at Peelar and Doughton Roads and Highway 7, across from Portage Parkway, at MacIntosh Boulevard and Cidermill Avenue, Pippin Road, Langstaff Road West and Edlican Drive.

YRT buses drop off or pick up at stops along the branch

  • every 28 minutes Mondays to Fridays during rush hours,
  • every 27 minutes Saturdays before about noon,
  • every 21 minutes Saturdays from about noon until 9 p.m.
  • every 25 minutes Saturdays after 9 p.m.
  • every 38 minutes Sundays and holidays before 1 p.m.
  • every 27 minutes Sundays and holidays from about 1 until 7 p.m.
  • every 36 minutes Sundays and holidays after about 7 p.m.

YRT is also decreasing service and increasing the frequency of service along parts of the route.

90 Leslie

Summer service ends and regular service resumes.

Starting Tuesday, September 3, YRT resumes operating northbound buses on two extra trips along the route Mondays to Fridays to accommodate passengers traveling to Richmond Green High School.

The morning bus leaves Don Mills Station at 7:45 a.m. Mondays to Fridays and ends its trip in the bus loop at Richmond Green at 8:29 a.m. The afternoon bus leaves Don Mills Road north of Steeles Avenue West at 2:35 a.m. and ends its trip in the Richmond Green loop at 2:57 p.m.

YRT is also adjusting the schedule of the route.

Increasing service along routes


31 Aurora North

Summer service ends and regular service resumes.

Starting Tuesday, September 2, YRT resumes an extra trip along the route to serve passengers traveling from St. Maximilian Kobe Catholic High School.

The extra bus leaves St. Maximilian Kobe at 2:44 p.m. Mondays to Fridays. It ends its trip in Aurora GO Station bus terminal at 2:45 p.m. It then leaves the station at 2:46 p.m. and operates along the regular route.

YRT is also extending the path and adjusting the schedule for some buses operating along the route.

18 Bur Oak

Summer service ends and regular service resumes.

Starting Tuesday, September 2, YRT resumes extra trips along the route to serve passengers traveling to and from Bur Oak Secondary School and Pierre Elliot Trudeau High School.

Mondays to Fridays it operates an extra westbound bus. It starts its trip on Church Street Markham west of Country Glen Road (across from Markham Stouffville Hospital) at 7:24 a.m. It arrives at Bur Oak Avenue and Kennedy Road, west of Pierre Elliot High School at 7:56 a.m. It ends its trip beside Angus Glen Community Centre at 8:03 a.m.

An extra eastbound bus leaves Angus Glen Community Centre at 2:56 p.m. It arrives at Bur Oak Avenue and Roy Rainey Avenue - west of Bur Oak Secondary School at 3:08 p.m. Mondays to Friday. Two more eastbound buses leave Bur Oak and Roy Rainey at 3:07 p.m.

Both extra buses that leave Roy Rainey Avenue at 3:07 p.m. arrive on Church west of Country Glen at 3:38 p.m. The extra bus that started its trip in Angus Glen Loop at 2:56 p.m. ends its trip on Church west of Country Glen at 3:39 p.m.

YRT is also revising the path of some buses operating along the route and adjusting the schedule for some buses operating along the route.

Instead, starting Sunday, August 31, buses operate along the new 20A branch of the route Mondays to Fridays during rush hours and all day Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Buses operating along the new branch remain on Jane Street during their trips, instead of diverting along Locke Street, Creditstone Road, Edlican Drive, Courtland Avenue, Edgeley Boulevard, Langstaff Road West, Millway Avenue, Portage Parkway and Interchange Way.

Southbound buses no longer drop off or pick up passengers at these stops Saturdays, Sundays or holidays:

  • on Courtland Avenue across from Millway Avenue and at Edgeley Boulevard,
  • on Edgeley Boulevard south of Courtland Avenue,
  • on Langstaff Road West at Millway Avenue,
  • on Millway Avenue at Applewood Crescent, Cidermill and Pennsylvania Avenues, south of Pennsylvania Avenue and at Portage Parkway,
  • on Portage Parkway at Buttermill Avenue and Edgeley Boulevard,
  • on Edgeley Boulevard at Apple Mill Road and Highway 7 and
  • on Interchange Way at Commerce Street, east of Exchange Avenue and at Jane Street.

Southbound buses continue to serve the stops all day Mondays to Fridays.

Northbound buses no longer serve these stops Saturdays, Sundays or holidays:

760 Vaughan Mills / Wonderland

Friday, August 29 was the last day that YRT operates buses along the route Mondays to Fridays, except for statutory holidays.

After Labour Day, Monday, September 1, buses operate Saturdays, Sundays and holidays only. Buses start northbound service hourly from Finch GO Bus Terminal at 9 a.m. and southbound from Canada’s Wonderland at 10 a.m.

In September, the last northbound bus leaves Finch GO Bus Terminal at 7 p.m. The last southbound bus leaves Canada’s Wonderland Terminal at 8 p.m.

In October and November, the last northbound bus leaves Finch at 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. The last southbound bus leaves Wonderland at 5 p.m.

Thanksgiving, Monday, October 13, buses operate every 45 minutes between Finch and Vaughan Mills terminals. The first northbound bus leaves Finch at 9 a.m. The first southbound bus leaves Vaughan Mills at 9:42 a.m. The last northbound bus leaves Finch at 6:45 p.m. The last southbound bus leaves Vaughan Mills at 7:27 p.m.

Increasing the frequency of service along routes


20 / 20A Jane

Starting Sunday, August 31, YRT introduces service along a new 20A branch of the route all day Saturdays, Sundays and holidays and Mondays to Fridays during rush hours.

YRT is increasing the frequency of service along parts of the route where buses serve both branches during rush hours:

  • on Jane Street between Teston Road and Edlican Drive / Courtland Avenue and between Interchange Way / Peeler Road,
  • on Steeles Avenue East between Jane and Keele Streets and
  • on York University’s Keele Campus.

On these parts of the route, buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops every 14 minutes, instead of every 19 minutes during rush hours.

Summer service ends and regular service resumes

Buses drop off or pick up passengers at vivastations north of Bernard Avenue every 12 minutes, instead of every 15 minutes. They serve vivastations south of Bernard every 6 minutes, instead of every 7½ minutes.

Viva pink

Since Metrolinx and York Region contractors have completed the Highway 7 East rapidway between South Town Centre Boulevard / Town Centre Boulevard and Highway 404, starting Tuesday, September 2, YRT is increasing the frequency of service along the route Mondays to Fridays during rush hours.

Buses drop off or pick up passengers at vivastations along the route every 15 minutes, instead of every 16 minutes. At stops between Unionville GO Station and Richmond Hill Centre Terminal, where buses serving both the Viva purple and Viva pink routes operate, buses serve vivastations every 7½ minutes, instead of every 8 minutes.

East of Unionville GO Station, buses serve vivastations every 15 minutes, instead of every 16 minutes, during rush hours.


Decreasing the frequency of service along routes


91 Bayview

Starting Tuesday, September 2, YRT decreases the frequency of service along the route Mondays to Fridays during rush hours. South of Bayview Plaza buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops every 8 minutes, instead of every 10 minutes. **North and west of Bayview Plaza, where buses operate along the separate 91 and 91A branches, buses serve stops every 20 minutes, instead of every 16 minutes.

YRT is also adjusting the schedule for the limited-stop express and local branches of the route.

32 Aurora South

Summer service ends and regular service resumes.

Starting Tuesday, September 2, YRT again revises the path for some buses operating along the route to serve passengers traveling to and from Cardinal Carter Catholic High School and Dr. G. W. Williams Secondary School.

The southbound bus that leaves Stone Road west of Bayview Avenue at 7:15 a.m. diverts from the regular route at Bathurst Street and Bloomington Road West / 15 Sideroad to Cardinal Carter Catholic High School. It drops off passengers in the school’s bus loop at 8:05 a.m., then rejoins the regular route at Bloomington West and Bathurst to head toward Seneca College’s King Campus.

The southbound bus that starts its trip on Stone west of Bayview at 7:42 a.m. operates along the regular route to Wellington Street East and Berczy Street, then detours to Dr. G. W. Williams Secondary School, dropping off passengers at 7:57 a.m. It rejoins the regular route at Edward and Yonge Streets.

A northbound bus picks up passengers in the Cardinal Carter loop at 2:35 p.m., then rejoins the regular route at Bathurst Street and McClellan Way. It continues along the regular route to Wellington East and Berczy, diverting to pick up passengers on Dunning Avenue beside Dr. G. W. Williams at 3:11 p.m. It then rejoins the regular route at Yonge Street and Allaura Boulevard / Henderson Drive.

YRT is also adjusting the schedule of the route.

18 Bur Oak

Summer service ends and regular service resumes. Starting Tuesday, September 2, YRT again revises the path of some buses operating along the route to serve passengers traveling to and from Bur Oak Secondary School and Pierre Elliot Trudeau High School.

Mondays to Fridays, the westbound bus that leaves Church Street Markham west of Country Glen Road at 7:24 a.m. Mondays to Fridays, operates along the regular route to Bur Oak and White’s Hill Avenues, then diverts:

eastward along White’s Hill;
northward along Cornell Rouge Boulevard;
westward along Morning Dove Drive;
northward along Cornell Centre Boulevard; and then
westward along 16th Avenue to Bur Oak Avenue,
resuming their regular route northward along Bur Oak.

The bus drops off and picks up passengers at extra stops

  • on White’s Hill Avenue at Bittersweet Street, Cornwall Drive, John Allan Cameron Street and Cornell Rouge Boulevard,
  • on Cornell Rouge Boulevard at Morning Dove Drive,
  • on Morning Dove Drive at Cornell Centre Boulevard,
  • on Cornell Centre Boulevard south of 16th Avenue and
  • on 16th Avenue across from Black Creek Drive and at Bur Oak Avenue.

An extra westbound bus leaves Church west of Country Glen at 7:32 a.m., proceeds:

westward along Church;
southward along Ninth Line;
eastward along Highway 7;
southward along Stoney Stanton Drive and Michelina Terrace;
westward along Kenilworth Gate;
northward along Ninth Line; and then
eastward along Church Street to Bur Oak Avenue
resuming their regular route northward along Bur Oak.

The bus picks up passengers at extra stops:

  • on Michelina Terrace at Kenilworth Gate,
  • on Kenilworth Gate at The Barley Lea Street,
  • on Ninth Line across from Rose Way and
  • on Church Street (eastbound) east of Butternut Lane [east] beside Markham Stouffville Hospital.

An extra eastbound bus leaves Church west of Country Glen at 3:38 p.m. Mondays to Fridays, then proceeds:

westward along Church Street;
southward along Ninth Line; and then
eastward along Highway 7;
southward along Stoney Stanton Drive and Michelina Terrace; and then
westward along Kenilworth Gate to The Barley Lea Street,
ending its trip.

The bus drops off passengers at extra stops:

  • on Michelina Terrace at Kenilworth Gate and
  • on Kenilworth Gate at The Barley Lea Street.

Another extra eastbound buses leaves Angus Glen Community Centre at 2:58 p.m. It arrives at Bur Oak Avenue and Roy Rainey Avenue west of Bur Oak Secondary School at 3:09 p.m. Mondays to Friday. Two more eastbound buses leave Bur Oak and Roy Rainey at 3:10 p.m.

The extra buses operate along their regular route to Bur Oak and 16th Avenues, then divert:

eastward along 16th;
southward along Cornell Centre Boulevard;
eastward along Morning Dove Drive;
southward along Cornell Rouge Boulevard; and then
westward along White’s Hill Avenue to Bur Oak,
resuming their regular route southward along Bur Oak.

The buses drop off and pick up passengers at extra stops

  • on 16th Avenue at Black Creek Drive and Cornell Centre Boulevard;
  • on Morning Dove Drive across from Quail Hollow and at Cornell Rouge Boulevard,
  • on Cornell Rouge Boulevard at White’s Hill Avenue and
  • on White’s Hill Avenue at John Allen Cameron Street, Cornwall Drive and Bittersweet Street.

An eastbound bus leaves Newmarket GO Bus Terminal at 7:50 a.m. Mondays to Fridays and operates along the regular route to Gorham Street and Alexander Road. It diverts to Sacred Heart, dropping off passengers at 8:04 a.m. It then rejoins the regular route at Carson Drive and Gorham.

A westbound bus leaves 404 Town Centre Terminal at 2:23 p.m. and operates along the regular route to Gorham and Carson. It diverts to Sacred Heart, dropping off passengers at 8:04 a.m. It then rejoins the regular route at Alexander and Gorham.

YRT is also adjusting the schedule of some buses operating along the route.

81 Inspiration

Summer service ends and regular service resumes.

Starting Tuesday, September 2, YRT again revises the path of some buses operating along the route to accommodate passengers traveling to and from Richmond Hill High School.

The bus that leaves Bernard Terminal at 7:55 a.m. Mondays to Fridays operates along along the regular route on its return trip to Yonge Street and Devonsleigh Boulevard. It diverts to the school, dropping off passengers at 8:27 a.m.

The bus that leaves Bernard at 3:39 p.m. diverts immediately to the school, picking up passengers at 3:43 p.m. It rejoins the regular route at Devonsleigh and Yonge.

57 / 57A Mulock

Starting Tuesday, September 2, YRT again revises the path for some buses operating along the route to accommodate passengers traveling to and from Jean Vanier Catholic High School.

The southbound buses that leave Shadow Falls Drive south of Wolf Trail Crescent [south] at 7:42 a.m. and 2:13 p.m. Mondays to Fridays operates along their regular route to Newkirk Road and Crosby Avenue. They then divert to Jean Vanier, dropping off or picking up passengers on Crosby Avenue west of Bayview Avenue at 8:03 a.m. and 2:34 p.m. They rejoin the regular route at Centre Street East and Newkirk.

The northbound buses that leave Richmond Hill Centre Terminal at 7:39 a.m. and 2:08 p.m. operate along the regular route to Newkirk and Centre East, then divert to Jean Vanier, dropping off or picking up passengers on Crosby west of Bayview at 8:06 a.m. and 2:35 p.m. They rejoin the regular route at Crosby and Newkirk..

Starting Tuesday, September 2, YRT again revises the path for some buses operating along the route to serve passengers traveling to and from Aurora High School. The buses that leave Aurora GO Station at 7:32 a.m. and 2:46 p.m. Mondays to Fridays divert from the regular route at Wellington Street West and Haida Drive to drop off or pick up passengers at Wellington West and McDonald Drive - across the street from the school. They arrive at the school at 7:44 a.m. and 3:02 p.m. and then return to the regular route at McDonald and Haida Drives.

YRT is also increasing service and adjusting the schedule for some buses operating along the route.

Starting Tuesday, September 2, YRT again extends the path for some buses operating along the route to accommodate passengers traveling to and from Sacred Heart Catholic High School.

A eastbound bus leaves Newmarket GO Bus Terminal at 7:21 a.m. It proceeds along the regular route to Bristol Road and Stiver Road, then detours along Stiver, Carlisle Street, London Road and Dorchester Street, rejoining the regular route at Dorchester and Bristol. The bus again proceeds along the regular route to Main Street North and Davis Drive then diverts to Sacred Heart, dropping off passengers at 7:56 a.m.

Another eastbound bus leaves Newmarket terminal at 1:55 p.m. It proceeds along the regular route to Main Street North and Davis Drive then diverts to Sacred Heart, ending its trip at 2:27 p.m.

A westbound bus picks up passengers on Srigley Street across from Sacred Heart at 2:35 p.m. Mondays to Fridays. It proceeds along Srigley, Alexander Road, Queen Street and Main Street South. It joins the regular route on Davis Drive west of Main Street North, ending its trip in Newmarket GO Bus Terminal at 3:13 p.m.

Northbound buses leave Commerce Valley West west of Leslie at 8:35 a.m. and 3:25 p.m. They operate along the regular route to Elgin Mills East at Redstone, then divert to Richmond Green, dropping off or picking up passengers at 9:02 a.m. and 3:57 p.m. They then return to Redstone south of Elgin Mills East for a return southbound trip along the route.

A northbound bus leaves St. Robert at 3 p.m., then rejoins the regular route on Leslie Street at Commerce Valley.

The southbound bus that usually leaves Stone west of Bayview at 7:15 a.m. Mondays to Fridays diverts to Cardinal Carter, dropping off passengers at 8:05 a.m. After it rejoins its regular route, it serves stops west of Cardinal Carter as much as 10 minutes later than usually, ending its trip on the campus at 8:18 a.m.

The northbound bus that leaves McClellan Way east of Bathurst Street at 7:54 a.m. diverts to Williams, dropping off passengers at 8:03 a.m. After it rejoins its regular route, the buses serve stops north and east of Williams as much as three minutes later than usually, ending its trip on Stone west of Bayview at 8:21 a.m.

The northbound bus that usually starts its trip on McClellan east of Bathurst at 2:46 p.m., starts instead in the bus loop at Cardinal Carter at 2:35 a.m. After rejoining the regular route, it serves stops at the same time as usually, until it diverts to Williams, picking up passengers at 3:11 p.m. After it again rejoins its regular route, the buses serve stops north and east of Williams as much as seven minutes later than usually, ending its trip on Stone West of Bayview at 3:17 p.m.

Starting Tuesday, September 2, YRT adjusts the Monday-to-Friday schedules to better reflect actual travel times and help keep buses on schedule.

Summer service ends and regular service resumes, so, also starting Tuesday, September 2, YRT adjusts the Monday-to-Friday schedule of some buses operating along the route due to longer trips. It’s revising the path of these buses to accommodate passengers traveling to and from Sir William Mulock Secondary School.

The westbound buses that leave 404 Town Centre Terminal at 7:20 and 7:31 a.m. and 2:48 p.m. Mondays to Fridays divert to Mulock school, arriving at 7:37 and 7:54 a.m. and 3:07 p.m. After they rejoin the regular route, they drop off or pick up passengers at stops along the route west and north of the school as much as four minutes later than usually, ending their trips in Newmarket GO Bus Terminal at 7:50 and 8:10 a.m. and 3:20 p.m.

The eastbound buses that leave Newmarket terminal at 7:20 a.m. and 2:32 and 2:56 p.m. divert to Mulock school, arriving at 7:38 a.m. and 2:50 and 3:13 p.m. After they rejoin the regular route, the serve stops east of Mulock as much as six minutes later than usually, ending their trips in 404 Town Centre Terminal at 7:55 a.m. and 3:12 and 3:31 p.m.

86 Newkirk - Red Maple

Summer service ends and regular service resumes.

Starting Tuesday, September 2, YRT adjusts the Monday-to-Friday schedule of some buses operating along the route due to longer trips. It’s revising the path of these buses to accommodate passengers traveling to and from Jean Vanier Catholic High School.

The southbound buses that leaves Redstone Road south of Elgin Mills Road East at 7:31 a.m. Mondays to Fridays diverts to St. Robert, dropping off passengers at 8:10 a.m. and ending its trip, instead of continuing to Commerce Valley Drive East east of Leslie Street.

The northbound buses that leave Commerce Valley East east of Leslie at 8:35 a.m. and 3:25 p.m. divert to Richmond Green, dropping off or picking up passengers at 9:02 a.m. and 3:57 p.m. They return to the regular route on Redstone south of Elgin Mills East as much as 11 minutes later than usually at 9:06 a.m. and 4:01 p.m.

The northbound that usually leaves Commerce Valley East east of Leslie at 3:02 p.m., starts its trip by picking up passengers in the St. Robert bus loop at 2:50 p.m. It serves regular stops along the route as much as 5 minutes later than usually, ending its trip on Redstone south of Elgin Mills East at 3:31 p.m.

50 / 50B Queensway

Starting Tuesday, September 2, YRT adjusts the Monday-to-Friday and Saturday schedules to better reflect actual travel times and help keep buses on schedule.

It’s also adjusting the schedules of the 50B branch of the route to maintain connections for passengers transferring between buses serving the two parts of the route at Pefferlaw.

The northbound buses that leave Commerce Valley East east of Leslie at 8:35 a.m. and 3:25 p.m. divert to Richmond Green, dropping off or picking up passengers at 9:02 a.m. and 3:57 p.m. They return to the regular route on Redstone south of Elgin Mills East as much as 11 minutes later than usually at 9:06 a.m. and 4:01 p.m.
