MiWay raises fares, January 28

You’ll pay more to ride local buses in Mississauga, starting Monday, January 28.

That day, MiWay raises the price of some transit fares, including cash fares, tickets and weekly passes for adult passengers and all fares for seniors.

Mississauga City Council agreed to hike the fares when it approved the City’s 2013 - 2016 Business Plan and 2013 Budget in December. It also gave the nod to more transit service hours this year and to fund service along part of the Mississauga Busway, its bus rapid transit line, which will open later this year.

In a media release, the City of Mississauga says it needs higher fares “to offset cost pressures in the… 2013 budget”. The price of cash fares, student fares and adult monthly passes remain the same as they are now.

“Our customers are important to us and we have worked hard to maintain a balance between affordable fare options and a reasonable cost recovery for taxpayers,” said Geoff Marinoff, Mississauga’s director of transit. “To make transit a more attractive alternative to the automobile, there is an ongoing commitment to capital and operating investments,” said Marinoff.

Adult passengers will pay another ten cents per ticket, as the price jumps from $2.70 to $2.60 each. Buying a weekly adult pass will cost you another $3 each week — $32, instead of $29.

Seniors will fork out more money no matter what form of fare media they buy starting Monday. Tickets go up five cents each to $1.80 from $1.75. You’ll have to shell out another $3 each month to buy a seniors monthly pass. They’ll cost you $50 per month, instead of $47. And, you’ll have to fish out another $30 from your purses and wallets if you want an annual seniors pass. Their price will be $504 each year, instead of $474.

Finally, the cost of GO ‘co-fares’ — the price you pay when boarding a MiWay bus to or from a GO Station (if you have a valid GO Transit day pass or single-ride ticket or a PRESTO fare card) hikes upward by five cents to 75 cents, instead of 70.

MiWay will no longer refund the cost of transit tickets. This change in policy will introduce greater consistency with the refund practices of other Greater Toronto Area transit systems. You can learn more about MiWay’s fare refund policy here.

The City is again freezing student fares at 2009 prices to continue to provide an affordable travel option for students as part of the City’s Youth Plan. As Presto card use continues to increase, MiWay will phase out student weekly passes in September. It wants to encourage students to check out PRESTO cards as another way to pay fares when traveling on MiWay buses or other transit systems in the Greater Toronto Area.
