Highway 7 rapidway construction blocks Cedarland Drive,
starting October 29

cedarland construction.jpgMetrolinx and York Region contractors continue to work on the project to build a rapidway — bus-only rapid transit lanes in the centre of the roadway — along Highway 7 East in Markham and Richmond Hill.

Starting tomorrow, Monday, October 29, the work closes Cedarland Drive between South Town Centre Boulevard and Warden Avenue until February, 2013.

While the street is closed, contractors are:

  • removing sidewalks;
  • widening the road with another two lanes for the rapidway; and
  • building two stations and platforms

You can no longer park on Cedarland Drive during construction and after the rapdieway is open on the south side of the street. In addition to rapidway construction, contractors are also relocating utilities and building a condominium nearby.

For safety reasons, motorists and pedestrians can no longer travel along Cedarland Drive. They may, however, use Clegg Road, which runs one block north parallel to Cedarland, as an alternate route.

In the spring, after the contractors have finished working on Cedarland Drive, they’ll start widening the street and road and boulevard on South Town Centre Boulevard. This work will restrict traffic to just one lane in each direction. They’ll maintain pedestrian access on one side of the street throughout the construction work.
