GO Transit raises fares, February 18

At its meeting of Monday, January 9, the Metrolinx Board of Directors approved raising GO Transit fares, starting this Saturday, February 18. This is the first time that GO has increased its fares in almost two years.

Starting Saturday, the cost of an adult single-ride ticket increase:

  • by 30 cents for fares that are currently between $4.20 and $5.50;
  • by 35 cents increase for fares that are currently between $5.51 and $7.00; and
  • by 40 cents for fares that are currently greater than $7.00.

In a media release, GO says it “made every effort to create a fair and balanced fare system for customers across our system. By introducing three different fare increase increments based upon distance travelled, we are ensuring the increase is more even across all fares.”

The increase also affects all other GO fare categories. For example, GO is changing its fare discount structure. Buying an adult monthly pass saves 15 percent off the cost of 40 single-ride tickets. PRESTO users continue to save 17 per cent off the cost of 40 single-ride tickets. For students, buying a monthly pass saves 30 per cent off the cost of 40 single-ride tickets. PRESTO student users continue to save 35 per cent off the cost of 40 single-ride tickets.

GO says increasing fares help it “meet the growing demand for GO services by providing more parking spaces, improving service reliability, ensuring our facilities and equipment are well-maintained and keeping our riders in the know with even better communications.”
