HSR revises routes and services, September 6

The Hamilton Street Railway is setting up another crosstown express route, extending another route and making various other changes to its routes and services, starting Sunday, September 6

The new north-south 20 A-Line express bus route along James and Upper James Streets is similar to the HSR’s east-west 10 B-Line express route along Main and King Streets and Queenston Road. (Originally, the HSR dubbed the “B-Line” route the “Beeline”, simply because it operated directly between east- and west-end Hamilton with few stops.)

The express bus routes prepare passengers for future rapid transit lines. An east-west and a north-south rapid transit line across Hamilton supports the City of Hamilton’s rapid transit plan, the Government of Ontario’s MoveOntario 2020 plan and the Metrolinx regonal transportation plan, “The Big Move”.

The changes affect these routes:

1 King; 3 Cannon; 4 Bayfront; 6 Aberdeen; 7 Locke; 8 York, 20 A-Line express; 21 Upper Kenilworth; 22 Upper Ottawa; 23 Upper Gage; 24 Upper Sherman; 27 Upper James; 33 Sanatorium; 34 Upper Paradise; 35 College; 51 University; 56 Confederation Park; 99 Waterfront shuttle; Redeemer University College shuttle.

Specifically, the HSR is: introducing a new route; canceling current routes; extending a current route; resuming extra service to colleges and universities; and adjusting the schedules of current routes.

Extending a current route

44 Rymal

Starting Tuesday, September 8, the HSR extends the route both eastward and westward so that buses operate between the Ancaster Business Park in Duff’s Corners and the Eastgate Terminal.

Eastbound buses start their trips at the eastern end of Cormorant Drive, then proceed:

westward along Cormorant;
northeastward along Osprey Drive;
westward along Sandhill Drive;
northward along Tradewinds Drive;
eastward along Wilson Street West, Garner and Rymal Roads West and East;
northward along Upper Centennial Parkway and Centennial Parkway South; and then
westward along Queenston Road to Eastgate Terminal.

Westbound buses reverse this routing.

During Monday-to-Friday morning rush hours, eastbound buses leave Cormorant Drive at 6:19 a.m. and then every 30 minutes until 9:49 a.m. They arrive at Eastgate Terminal at 6:12 a.m. and then every 30 minutes until 9:42 a.m. Westbound buses leave Eastgate at 5:40 a.m., 6:22 a.m. and then every 30 minutes until 9:52 a.m. They arrive at Cormorant at 6:05 a.m., 6:35 a.m., 7:17 a.m. and then every 30 minutes until 9:47 a.m.

Early east- and westbound buses start their trips at Rymal Road and Upper James Street after traveling from the Mountain Garage. Late east- and westbound buses end their trips at Rymal and Upper James before returning to the garage.

Extending the route offers passengers new transfer points. At Duff’s Corners, Garner Road West and Shaver Drive and at Garner West and Fiddler’s Green Road, passengers can transfer to or from HSR buses operating along the 16 Ancaster route. At Redeemer University College, passengers can transfer to and from Redeemer University College shuttle buses. At Centennial Parkway South and King Street East, passengers can transfer to or from HSR buses operating along the 5 Delaware, 52 Dundas, 5B Main West and 58 Stoney Creek local routes. At Eastgate, passengers can transfer to or from HSR buses operating along the 10 B-Line express, 1 King, 55 Stoney Creek Central and 58 Stoney Creek local routes.

Extending the route also eliminates the transfer point for passengers wanting to connect with buses operating along the 43 Stone Church route at Anchor Road and Stone Church Road East.

Starting Tuesday, September 8, the HSR no longer operates buses along Pritchard Road between Harlowe Road and Rymal Road East. HSR buses operating along the 22 Upper Ottawa route serve HSR stops along Harlowe and Anchor Roads Monday-to-Saturday evenings and during the day on Sundays and holidays.
