TTC detours streetcars and buses during Queen / Dufferin construction this weekend

Thanks to Transit Toronto reader David Fisher for alerting us to these detours.

Starting Friday, November 20, all day Saturday, November 21 and Sunday, November 22 and early Monday, November 23, the TTC is detouring tranist services during construction at Queen Street West and Dufferin Street.

(Construction contractors are moving the railway bridges that cross at the intersection. We’re not sure which project requires moving the bridges: the project to eliminate the Dufferin Street jog at Queen or the project to expand the Canadian National / GO Transit rail corridor above the same intersection — or both.)

The detour is detouring streetcars and buses operating along the 29 Dufferin, 329 Dufferin overnight, 301 Queen overnight and 501 Queen routes.

Construction projects end; regular transit services resume

Municipalities have been busy this summer and fall with many infrastructure projects. And, transit agencies have been busy diverting or adjusting their regular services so that they could continue to serve passengers during the construction season.

(The large number of construction projects may have resulted from provincial and federal funds to create construction jobs and stimulate local economies.)

As winter approaches, many of these projects are winding down and transit services are settling back into their regular schedules and routines for the winter.

Projects affecting transit that we’ve been watching and that have now ended for the season — or permanently — include:

Subway tunnel damage shuts down part of the Yonge line (UPDATE: Service Now Resuming)

Due to damage caused by a contractor working on a bridge in the decked over portion of the subway between Summerhill and St. Clair stations subway service is turning back at Bloor and Eglinton stations. Little is known about what exactly happened in the tunnel but it appears it might be significant in terms of damage. Expect this delay to be long lasting and have an effect on service for the rest of the evening. This post will be updated when more information becomes available.

SUGGESTED ALTERNATES INCLUDE: 97 Yonge (during rush hour). The 97 Yonge runs from Steeles to Queens Quay during the AM and PM rush hours. This bus will run in addition to shuttle service. It is infrequent although it makes local stops as well.

Spadina subway line - If you are looking to avoid delays you can also head over to the Spadina subway line and get on the subway at Wilson, Lawrence West, Eglinton West, St Clair West and Glencairn Stations.

To get to the Spadina Line from the Yonge Line take the following buses

96 Wilson from York Mills station to Wilson Station

52 Lawrence West from Lawrence Station to Lawrence West Station

32 Eglinton West from Eglinton Station to Eglinton West Station

14 Glencairn from Davisville Station to Glencairn Station

512 St. Clair from St Clair Station to St. Clair West Station

UPDATE AT 3:15 PM - SUBWAY SERVICE BETWEEN BLOOR AND EGLINTON
STATION WILL NOT RESUME UNTIL THURSDAY NOVEMBER 19TH AT THE
EARLIEST

(Update: 7:44 p.m.): TTC Chairman Adam Giambrone has spoken to reporters and confirmed that the Yonge subway between Bloor and Eglinton will remain closed for the remainder of the night. Passengers heading north of Bloor can either use the shuttle buses, or avoid some of the chaos by going “round the bend” via Union, travelling up the Spadina subway and taking one of a number of eastbound services from either Eglinton West, Lawrence West, Wilson or Downsview stations.

Giambrone told reporters that the TTC hopes to have the tunnel cleaned up and service resumed in time for tomorrow’s morning rush hour, but there are no guarantees, so continue to pay close attention to local media for updates and be prepared for a longer commute to work tomorrow morning. If subway service is still suspended between Eglinton and Bloor tomorrow, police will block off the curb lanes of Yonge Street for the exclusive use of shuttle buses. This will speed up service (while causing traffic congestion), but these buses will be unlikely to handle the full crowds this section of the Yonge line handles during rush hour. You may have to consider alternates, such as the Spadina subway, or the Don Mills bus (via Pape station, transferring to the Yonge subway at Bloor-Yonge).

We will keep you posted as this story develops.

(Update: 8:29 p.m.): Brad Ross, the TTC’s Director for Corporate Communications, has just announced that subway service is now resuming. Apparently, investigators have checked the tunnel where a contractor working on a project unrelated to the TTC accidentally instigated a partial collapse. The debris has been cleared away and the area has been declared safe to operate. This probably comes as a considerable relief to the TTC and commuters, who were worried about the potential impact a service suspension might have had on the morning commute tomorrow.

Please be patient for the next hour or so as the service readjusts and the crowds clear.

At these open houses, TTC and City staff are presenting the design that they prefer for both the underground and street-level segments of the line. For the surface segments, they will display the final stop and passenger platform locations and how they plan to manage traffic along Eglinton Avenue to guarantee fast and reliable light rail service.
