The TTC launches a new service on Steeles Avenue, across the north of the city, from Jane Street east to Bayview Avenue. At the west end, buses loop via south on Jane, west on Hullmar and north on Peter Kaiser. In the east, buses loop via south on Laureleaf and then east and north on Bestview. Service operates Monday to Friday, during rush hours and midday.

Service is not immediately a hit. A Headlights report at the time expressed disappointment with the lack of ridership, but service is retained.

New route begins operation, replacing the western portion of the old 60 STEELES with the Yonge subway at Finch. Buses follow the old route’s looping at Jane and run east on Steeles to Yonge Street, and then south on Yonge to Finch. Service increased to seven days a week, eighteen hours a day.

During the daytime on Mondays through Fridays, service extended west of Islington to a new off-street loop on Kipling Avenue, just north of Steeles. In addition, a new rush hour branch begins operation between Finch Station and Jane, following the original on-street loop of south on Jane, west on Hullmar and north on Peter Kaiser.

Service in the Kipling branch (60B) increased to include Monday through Friday evenings and all day Saturdays. Islington branch (60) operates on Saturday evenings and all day Sundays and holidays.

September 6, 1983

Coincident with the inauguration of the 117 ALNESS route (operating on Steeles Avenue between Alness and Jane and then running on transit-priority lanes to Wilson station on the Spadina subway), service ends on the 60A Jane rush hour branch, replaced with a new rush hour short turn service between Finch station and Bathurst, looping south on Bathurst, west on Fisherville and north on Carpenter.

Articulated buses no longer used on this route.

January 5, 1992

Saturday evening and Sunday daytime and early evening service added to the 60B Martin Grove branch. Service only cut back to Islington during late evenings on Sundays.

June 21, 1992

Looping revised for 60C York University buses, to include service to York Lanes.

October 17, 1993 (or earlier)

Following the introduction of electronic signs on all buses, express services now have their own branch letter designation. The exact date of the introduction of these new branch designations is unknown, but is believed to have occurred after the June 1992. Buses running express on Yonge Street during the rush hours are designated 60E (to Highway 27) and 60F (to York University)

February 13, 1994

New Monday through Friday evening service is added to the York University branch. Buses operate until about 10:30 p.m.

February 18, 1996

Due to budget cutbacks, Monday-Friday afternoon rush hour frequent service reduced, and early evening service reduced to every 11-12 minutes.

July 28, 1996

Route is designated as an accessible route with all off-peak trips and most peak trips operated by lift-equipped Orion buses. In late 2001, early 2002, lift-equipped Nova RTS buses arrive.

October 6, 1996

Saturday daytime service (between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.; later from 8 a.m.) added to the York University (60C) branch. Service reduced on the Martin Grove branch.

September 5, 1999

Additional short turn service added on Sundays on the York University (60C) branch.

June 11, 2000

An earlier round-trip added on Sundays and holidays, departing from Finch Station at approximately 7:40 a.m., and departing eastbound from Martin Grove at approximately 8:27 a.m. This new trip maked an earlier connection with the 8:31 a.m. departure on the new Vaughan Transit Route 27, operating from Martin Grove Loop.

October 15, 2000

Service increased on the 60C York University branch during the late evening from Monday to Friday, to reduce overcrowding. East of York University, service improved from every 16 minutes to every 12 minutes. West of York University, service changed from every 16 minutes to every 24 minutes.

January 7, 2001

Westbound service from Finch Station increased at the end of the daytime on Sundays and holidays, to reduce overcrowding. Three additional westbound trips added, at approximately 6:30, 6:50, and 7:10 p.m., between Finch Station and Weston Road.

February 18, 2001

Service increased during the afternoon peak period from Monday to Friday, from every 3 minutes 50 seconds to every 3 minutes 30 seconds.

September 2, 2001

Service increased during the daytime on Sundays and holidays. The combined service east of York University improved from every 10 min to every 8 min 30 s. Service west of York University improved from every 20 min to every 10 min.

January 7, 2002

A new earlier eastbound trip to Finch Station added, leaving Martin Grove at approximately 4:50 a.m., from Monday to Friday. A new later round trip added, leaving Martin Grove eastbound at approximately 2:15 a.m., and leaving Finch Station westbound at approximately 1:30 a.m., from Monday to Friday. Two additional eastbound trips added from York University to Steeles Avenue in the evenings from Monday to Friday. The trips depart from York University at approximately 9:15 and 9:39 p.m. to reduce crowding which now occurs when evening classes at the University are dismissed.

May 12, 2002

The 5:00 a.m. Monday-Friday eastbound departure from Martin Grove changed to start eastbound at Steeles & Peter Kaiser at 5:14 a.m. The 5:20 a.m. Monday-Friday eastbound departure from Martin Grove changed to start eastbound at Steeles & Peter Kaiser at 5:34 a.m. The 1:45 a.m. and 2:15 a.m. Monday-Friday eastbound departures from Martin Grove discontinued.

September 1, 2002

Service increased during the early evening on Saturdays from every 20 minutes to every 16 minutes.

Sundays from September 1 through October 6, 2002, inclusive.

Due to construction on the Sheppard subway, route is extended to York Mills Station during the Sunday morning hours (until noon) that subway service is normally provided. Service levels are not be changed. Buses operate both ways through the Finch station bus terminal and then south on Yonge, stopping only at Park Home Avenue and Sheppard Avenue.

March 30, 2003

Service increased between approximately 7:00 and 9:30 a.m. on Saturdays, to reduce crowding. Service east of Keele Street improved from every 20 minutes to every 10 minutes. Service at York University on the 60C (Finch Stn-York University) branch starts earlier, at approximately 9:00 a.m., instead of 10:00 a.m.

August 31, 2003

Additional time added to the schedules, Monday through Friday, to improve reliability in the face of delays caused by traffic congestion. This increases headways slightly.

September 7, 2004

New Monday through Friday and Saturday daytime service provided west of Martin Grove to Highway 7 (60D). Service cut back to Martin Grove (60B) for Monday to Saturday evenings and Sundays daytimes and early evenings. Service cut back to Islington (60) for Sunday late evenings only.

Service increased in the afternoon peak period from Monday to Friday, as part of the TTC’s Ridership Growth Strategy. Combined service east of York University improved from every 3 minutes, 37 seconds to every 3 minutes, 22 seconds.
