In 1974, the Borough of York asked that the TTC extend service west from Bicknell loop into the Humber Boulevard area between Weston Road and Jane. This request, among other reasons, made the TTC abandon the ROGERS ROAD streetcar, since the line could be extended west more easily without streetcar tracks than with it.
The TTC initially promised that the extension would be served by trolley buses on the new 63F OSSINGTON service that replaced the streetcars, but the extension of overhead wires never occurred. In the meantime, the TTC established a shuttle service in the form of 48 HUMBER BLVD. It wouldn’t be until trolley bus service was abandoned that the route was incorporated into service along Rogers Road.

Due to bridge construction on Scarlett Road at Black Creek requiring that the 79 SCARLETT route be diverted, the 48 HUMBER BLVD route is temporarily extended west to fill the gap. From Jane and Alliance, buses run south on Jane, west on Foxwell, north on Scarlett, east on Ellins, north on Jane and east on Outlook, resuming the regular route.
This diversion operated until an unknown date after September 1983. The regular route was back in operation by February 1984, and the September 1983 service summary shows service operating between Jane and Bicknell only.
