Because construction on the Sheppard subway was tying up traffic around the Sheppard/Yonge intersection, the TTC decided to break up the 97 YONGE bus service into two separate routes, to improve reliability. Effective on this day, all 97 YONGE buses would operate from York Mills station south, via Wilson, Yonge Boulevard and Yonge Street. 197 NORTH YONGE buses operate north from Lawrence station, overlapping 97 YONGE service to Yonge Boulevard and continuing north on Yonge street to Steeles Avenue, looping via Steeles, Moore Park and Hilda.

Service operates roughly every thirty minutes (every 22 minutes during rush hours) from the opening of the subway until around 10 p.m.

October 14, 2001

With work in the Sheppard/Yonge intersection largely complete, the division of bus service on Yonge comes to an end, and 197 NORTH YONGE buses are reintegrated into 97 YONGE operations
