171 Progress East (1992-2001)

September 8, 1992

Service begins on a new rush hour route between Scarborough Centre station and Centennial College. Buses operate east along the bus-only roadway, east on Bushby Drive, north on Consilium Place, east on Corporate Drive and east on Progress Avenue, past Markham Road and into Centennial College, turning at the cul-de-sac. Buses operate out of Malvern Garage.

November 21, 1993

Service rerouted off of Corporate Drive, operating both ways along Progress Avenue east of Bushby Drive. Service on Corporate Drive replaced by 9 BELLAMY buses.

January 3, 1995

Scheduled midday service begins. Midday service had actually been operating on this route for several weeks by this point, thanks to significant ridership increases brought by a new adult high school at Markham and Progress.

June 1997

Midday frequencies improved to every 12 minutes.

February 14, 2000

Morning rush hour frequencies increased to every 5 minutes.

April 30, 2000

Due to seasonal ridership changes, morning peak service decreased to every 8 minutes. Service restored after Labour Day. By this time, normal service on 171 PROGRESS EAST operated with frequent service from 7:00 a.m. to 7:15 p.m. (PDF)

January 7, 2001

Service combined with 134 TAPSCOTT into the “C” branch of the new 134 PROGRESS route.
