TTC Routes in Numerical Order: All Time Listing

This TTC route number listing was originally published in Transfer Points, the newsletter of the Toronto Transportation Society in January 1994, it included all routes that had operated up to that time. An update showing changes to the list from 1994 to 1997 was publication in March 1997. The introduction that follows is taken from the original 1994 article. It is followed by the route numbering “convention”, and yes there are several exceptions to these guidelines. The chart that follows includes all updates to June 2009.

Introduction

Between 1988 and 1991 the TTC introduced many new bus routes with numbers as high as 191. This made it quite difficult even for the most dedicated transit enthusiast to keep track of all the changes. Last year your editor compiled a brief list of the higher route numbers from 191 back down to 100. It was about this time that John Knight brought a list of most TTC route to a Society meeting. We began working together filling in the numerous gaps. Our research revealed many route names that we knew should be numbered, but these numbers could not be found in the documents in our collections. In recent months our research was aided by a TTC Operators Manual from the collection of George Schpuniar, dated January 1, 1958. It detailed all TTC routes operating at that time along with their number. Additional assistance was provided by Bill Hood, a former TTC operator who has studied various aspects of the history of public transit in Toronto, and by Ray Corley.

And now here is the result of our research showing all the TTC routes that were operated since the numbering system was introduced in the 1956, (following approval at a February Commission meeting that year). While we are confident that all regular TTC routes that were assigned a route number are included on the list, some dates may not be exact. We believe that some special service routes (eg, CNE Express buses) were assigned numbers in the 700 series, but this could not be confirmed. If you have any corrections or additions please send a note to the Society and identify your source.

400 - 499 Accessible “Community” routes operated by Wheeltrans
500 - 599 Streetcar routes
600 - 699 Rapid Transit Routes (discontinued November 2002)

#	Streetcar route numbers began appearing in late 1979 as the CLRVs were introduced first on the Long Branch route, then gradually spreading throughout the system. Rollsigns on the PCC were adjusted to include route numbers during the early 1980s.
