Coxwell railway bridge construction:
TTC detour, starting June 10



Starting 7 a.m. Monday, June 10, the City of Toronto is closing

  • Coxwell Avenue, northbound lanes between [upper] Gerrard Street East / Fairford Avenue and Hanson Street

during a project to upgrade the railway bridge carrying the Kingston Subdivision tracks over the roadway. (VIA Rail Canada trains travelling between Toronto and Ottawa and Toronto and Montreal and GO Transit trains along the 09 Lakeshore East and 71 Stouffville lines use the tracks.)

The TTC is detouring buses along these routes, while the street is closed:

  • 22 Coxwell; and
  • 322 Coxwell overnight.

Railway-bridge construction on Coxwell Avenue and the TTC detours continue until November 25.


During this project, the city’s contractor will:

  • repair the bridge concrete deck, soffit, wingwalls and retaining walls;
  • build a new concrete barrier wall, curbs and sidewalks;
  • install new concrete stairs, to meet Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act requirements;
  • repave a pedestrian path along the south side of the railway tracks;
  • design and install a new lighting system with bird-proofing; and
  • install new traffic signs.

During phase 1 of the project, the work zone blocks the east sidewalk on Coxwell will be between Gerrard Street East and Hanson Street. The west sidewalk, including under the bridge, remains open to pedestrians. During phase 2, the east sidewalk, including the part under the bridge, is open to pedestrians. The west sidewalk is closed.

Southbound buses operate along their regular route.

From Monday, June 10 until Monday, November 25, northbound buses operate along their regular route to Coxwell Avenue and [upper] Gerrard Street East / Fairford Avenue, then detour:

eastward along Gerrard East;
northward along Woodbine Avenue; and then
westward along Danforth Avenue to Coxwell,
resuming their regular route northward along Coxwell.

Northbound buses skip their regular stops

  • on Coxwell Avenue at Casci Avenue, Hanson Street and Earl Haig and Danforth Avenues.

Instead, northbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at temporary stops

  • on Gerrard Street East at Beaton Avenue and Bowmore and Kingsmount Park Roads,
  • on Woodbine Avenue across from Merrill Avenue and
  • on Danforth Avenue west of Woodbine Avenue and at Woodmount, Glebemount, Woodington and Coxwell Avenues.
