King West / Stanley Terrace track repairs:
TTC detours, May 14, 15

Last week, TTC track crews identified a short section of broken rail

  • on King Street West near Stanley Terrace.

They made emergency, temporary repairs Friday, May 10. To ensure safety and maintain reliable streetcar service, track staff have scheduled a permanent rail repair for this area.

Starting 9 a.m. Tuesday, May 14, track crews occupy the streetcar allowance to complete the repairs. They work only in the track area, to

  • break and remove concrete to expose a short section of broken rail;
  • replace the old rail with new rail; and
  • place new concrete.

From 8 p.m. Tuesday until 6 a.m. Wednesday, May 15, the TTC is detouring streetcars around the work zone along these routes, while the crews replace the rail:

  • 304 King overnight;
  • 504A King (Dundas West Station - Distillery Loop); and
  • 504B King (Dufferin Gate Loop - Broadview Station).

Shuttle buses replace the cars between Shaw Street and Spadina Avenue.

According to the TTC, “Rail work of this nature is required around-the-clock to ensure quality installation of new rail and concrete.”

About 9 a.m. Tuesday, the track crew set up the work zone. Shortly after, they start localized excavation and chipping the concrete to expose the old rail. When they replace the old rail with new rail, they may cut, weld and grind the rail.

They’ll place concrete in the track area and set it to cure overnight. The new concrete requires curing time before the crews can remove the work zone and general traffic can resume flowing over the track area early Monday morning.
