YRT withdrawing all service from York U,
starting September 2

Banner-YorkU.jpgStarting Sunday, September 2, York Region Transit buses no longer operate directly into York University’s Keele campus.

Instead, most YRT buses currently operating through the campus will start and end their trips in the Pioneer Village Station bus terminal at Steeles Avenue West and Settlers Road, where you may walk to the campus, if you only want to pay one fare. You may also transfer to the TTC’s Line 1 Yonge - University subway for direct service into the campus. This option will cost you both a YRT and TTC fare.

Buses along these YRT routes operate to and from Pioneer Village Station bus terminal directly, starting Tuesday, September 2.

YRT is “restructuring” the Viva purple route so that buses no longer operate west of Richmond Hill Centre Terminal. If you want to continue to York University you’ll have to transfer to Viva orange buses at Richmond Hill Centre Terminal. Viva orange buses operate to and from Vaughan Metropolitan Centre, where you can board the TTC subway to travel directly onto the campus. However, this option will cost you both a YRT and TTC fare. You may also transfer from Viva orange to another YRT bus operating to and from Pioneer Village station bus terminal, where you can walk onto the campus. This option will only cost you a YRT fare.

When the TTC opened its subway extension into Vaughan, the TTC and YRT entered into a binding agreement requiring YRT to remove all transit service within the campus. The two transit agencies made the agreement to avoid duplicating service between YRT and the subway. Other transit agencies, such as GO Transit and Brampton Transit, are not bound by the same agreement that requires YRT to remove service from the campus.

While Metrolinx and all transit agencies in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton area continue to work on plans to integrate fares, YRT says, “At this time, it does not appear that fare integration will happen by September 2018.” It adds, “YRT continues to work with Metrolinx and the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) transit agencies towards a consistent approach to transit fares in the region that is customer-focused, simplified, and reflects the quality and value of service provided to all travellers, including post-secondary students.”

Passengers wishing to use YRT, TTC, or Brampton Transit services can still buy the GTA weekly pass at participating ticket agents, including Ink Blotz on the Keele campus.
