Queen East / Don River bridge construction:
TTC detours start October 30

Update — Sunday, November 8, 9:10 a.m.: Construction ended early — at 5 a.m. today — and streetcars have resumed regular service. Buses no longer replace streetcars in the area of the Don River bridge.

Starting 5 a.m. Monday, October 30, TTC track staff are replacing four rail expansion joints in the centre of the Queen Street East Bridge over the Don River west of Broadview Avenue.

The TTC is detouring streetcars operating along these routes, while the project proceeds:

  • 301 Queen overnight;
  • 304 King overnight;
  • 501 Queen; and
  • 504 King.

Shuttle buses replace the cars, operating through the construction zone:

Due to an ongoing shortage of streetcars, the TTC continues to operate buses along the 502 Downtowner and 503 Kingston Rd routes. The buses follow their regular paths through the construction zone.

(Updated — Sunday, November 8, 9:10 a.m.) Construction on Queen Street East at the Don River bridge and the TTC detours continue until 5 a.m. November 12 8.

During this project, crews remove short sections of rail near each rail joint. When they finish, streetcars can resume at regular speed through the area, smoothly crossing the joints.

To allow crews to work safely, the City of Toronto is restricting traffic to the curb lanes in each direction on the bridge. Westbound motorists can still access the Don Valley Parkway from Davies Avenue at the east end of the bridge.

Replacing rail expansion joints on the bridge is a complex process, the TTC says. To restore regular streetcar service through the area as quickly as possible, crews work “around-the-clock” — 24 hours a day. They’ll excavate to expose the rail at each of the four sites from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m. each day for five days. Overnight, they’ll install, weld and grind the new rail.
