TTC replacing Dundas Square, Victoria tracks,
starting July 17

Update — Friday, August 18, 10:47 a.m.: Construction has ended and TTC streetcars operating along the 505 Dundas route have resumed regular service between Bay and Church Streets.

*Update — Thursday, August 10, 12:04 p.m.: The City announced today that construction is ending Saturday, August 19 — 10 weeks earlier than schedule, subject to ongoing water-main-related testing. The contractor added two more crews, allowing the TTC to complete track work with one extra crew, also at an faster pace than usually.

The City and TTC worked with the contractors to add more crews without adding more costs to the original price of the contract. Crews also worked longer hours — from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m. Mondays to Saturdays on Dundas Street (6 a.m. until 2 a.m. during track work, to provide mre work areas for TTC crews) — and weekends and overnight hours by the underground contractor during the watermain work.

Update — Saturday, July 21, 10:47 p.m.: The City has now closed Dundas East to all traffic between Church and Victoria Streets so that crews can work longer hours complete the project more quickly.

City of Toronto and TTC contractors are proceeding to the next phase of the ongoing project to replace water-mains and the streetcar tracks on

  • Dundas Street East between Church and Yonge Streets.

Starting Monday, July 17, the City is closing the eastbound lanes of

  • Dundas Street East between Church and Yonge Streets; and
  • Dundas Street West between Bay and Yonge Streets

to traffic. The eastbound lanes are unavailable to motorists until September 16. One lane will be open to westbound traffic at all times.

The City is also closing parts of Victoria Street and Dundas Square during the same period.

City contractors are replacing the sidewalks and restoring the roadway after water-main construction and streetcar-track construction on Dundas East earlier this year.

TTC crews are replacing streetcar tracks:

  • From Monday, July 17 until Monday, August 7 — on Victoria Street at Dundas Square and south of Dundas Square.
  • From Tuesday, August 8 until Monday, August 21 — on Victoria Street between Dundas Street East and Dundas Square.
  • From Tuesday, August 22 until Saturday, September 16 — on Dundas Square between Victoria Street and Victoria Street Lane.

Note that the new end-of-construction date is now September 30, instead of October 31, as these graphics indicate.

The TTC must work overnight to replace tracks while crews:

  • remove the concrete and old streetcar track;
  • replace the concrete;
  • move new rail into position;
  • install the new rail; and
  • weld and grind the new rail.

The TTC may also upgrade the overhead streetcar wiring overnight, as necessary. The TTC explains that, “After-hours work… is required to support the daytime construction and complete the project as quickly as possible.”

The City says that the project is ahead of schedule and that it now expects to complete it Saturday, September 30 instead of Tuesday, October 31, as it previously announced.

The TTC continues to detour streetcars operating along this route:
