TTC revises routes and services, starting June 18

The TTC introduces its summer service changes this Sunday, June 18.

During the upcoming months, construction projects affect service along several routes.

Construction on College Street and Gerrard Street East require the TTC to detour streetcars operating along the 506 Carlton route in two locations. Shuttle buses operate along two different routes to temporarily replace the cars along parts of the route.

The TTC is starting work on its new McNicoll Garage and that results in it closing its McNicoll / Kennedy loop. But, in fact, that’s good news for passengers travelling along the 42 Cummer loop. Passengers who usually travel aboard buses along the east end of the route benefit from more service and more frequent service between Middlefield and Kennedy Roads.

Ongoing construction in Humber Loop has forced the TTC to divert buses operating along the 66 Prince Edward route and to extend the service further eastward along The Queensway.

Since it’s summer and many people are on vacation, the TTC reduces rush-hour service along many of its routes for the rest of June and all of July and August along these routes:

Making other changes to service along routes

9 Bellamy

The TTC restricts buses operating along this route from dropping off or picking up passengers at the eastbound stop on Kingston Road at Neilson Avenue from 4 until 6 p.m. Mondays to Fridays. This is due to the volume of traffic on Kingston Road during afternoon rush hours. The volume makes it difficult for buses to stop at Neilson then manoeuvre their vehicles across three lanes of traffic to turn left onto McCowan Road one block further east.

Starting Monday, June 19, the TTC expands this restriction to the period from 3:30 until 7 p.m.

Buses operating along the 102 Markham Rd route continue to serve the stop at all times, except overnight.

The TTC is also decreasing the frequency of service along the route.

2 Bloor - Danforth subway

Starting Sunday, June 18, the TTC again stores trains overnight in Vincent or “Keele” Yard between Dundas West and Keele Stations, to, it says, “[help] improve subway maintenance and reliability. Prior to its shutdown in 2013, to complete essential upgrades, the…Yard was used for subway workcar maintenance/storage and track maintenance training.”

The yard can store as many as eight trains. Four sets of storage tracks extend into a covered section below and east of Dorval Road.

By resuming operations in Vincent Yard, the TTC can:

  • increase the time for maintenance (train, track and signals) by as much as 40 minutes every night, because empty trains no longer have to run between Keele and Greenwood for maintenance before and after normal subway service hours.
  • increase day-to-day service reliability for passengers by letting TTC crews more efficiently get trains into position in the west end for the start of morning service. Most Line 2 trains currently enter service from the east end.

The TTC continues to maintain most Line 2 trains at the Greenwood subway yard in the east end.

The TTC is also decreasing the frequency of service along the line.

49 Bloor West

Starting Sunday, June 18, the TTC interlines at Kipling Station buses operating along the route with buses operating along the 30 Lambton route all day Sundays and holidays.

The last day for interlining the two routes is Labour Day, Monday, September 4.

Starting Sunday, June 18, due to upcoming construction on College Street and Gerrard Street East, the TTC operates buses, instead of streetcars along the entire route.

30 Lambton

Starting Sunday, June 18, the TTC is extending the route into High Park Saturdays, Sundays and holidays for the summer.

While buses operate along the longer route, it’s also interlining them at Kipling Station with buses operating along the 49 Bloor West route all day Sundays and holidays.

The last day for the extension into the park and for interlining the routes is Labour Day, Monday, September 4.

The TTC is also decreasing the frequency of service along the route.

Transit agencies often interline two or more routes with a common terminal to save resources — meaning the number of drivers and the number of vehicles to provide the services. During summer, for example, when buses operating along the 49 Bloor West route arrive in Kipling Station Sundays and holidays, they continue along the 30 Lambton route to High Park. After the bus returns to Kipling, it continues along the 49 Bloor West route.
