Streetcars return to St Clair, November 20

Three TTC construction projects — at St Clair and St Clair West Stations and along St. Clair Avenues East and West — have ended, the TTC says, “six weeks ahead of schedule”.

Starting tomorrow, Sunday, November 20, the TTC is restoring streetcar service along the entire 512 St Clair route between Gunn’s Loop [Keele] and St Clair Station.

During these projects, TTC crews and contractors:

  • rebuilt the streetcar loading platforms at St Clair Station;
  • installed PRESTO fare gates at St Clair and St Clair West stations;
  • replaced overhead wires inside the streetcar loop at St Clair Station;
  • upgraded streetcar tracks and overhead wires at St Clair West Station;
  • retrofitted a four-metre (13.12-foot) section of each passenger platform to make sure passengers using mobility devices can easily board the new, low-floor Toronto Flexity streetcars; and
  • placed tactile strips on passenger platforms “for accessibility”.

Buses have replaced streetcars:

Since streetcars carry more passengers than buses, the TTC is also slightly decreasing the frequency of service along the route at most times of the week.

With the end of construction at St Clair Station, the TTC is also resuming bus service into the lower bus terminal on Pleasant Boulevard along the 74 Mt Pleasant and 88 South Leaside routes. The buses have been dropping off or picking up passengers on the street since June 19.

Buses operating along the 90 Vaughan route resumed service into St Clair West Station terminal Sunday, September 4.

Buses operating along the 33 Forest Hill and 126 Christie routes resumed service into St Clair West Station terminal Sunday, October 1.

512 St Clair

The TTC decreases the frequency of service along the route at most times of the week. Streetcars resume, replacing temporary buses and, since they carry more passengers, the TTC operates fewer vehicles than usually along the route and less frequently than the buses.

Starting Sunday, November 20, streetcars drop off or pick up passengers at stops along the route east of St Clair West Station:

  • every 10½ minutes, instead of every 9½ minutes, Sundays and holidays before about 8 a.m.; and
  • every 5½ minutes, instead of every 5 minutes, from about noon until 7 p.m.

Starting Monday, November 21, the cars serve passengers at stops along the route:

  • every 2 minutes 50 seconds, instead of every 2½ minutes, Mondays to Fridays during morning rush hours;
  • every 4½ minutes, instead of every 4 minutes 15 seconds, from about 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.;
  • every 6 minutes 15 seconds, instead of every 6 minutes, from about 7 until 10 p.m.; and
  • every 6 minutes, instead of every 7 minutes, after about 10 p.m.

Starting Saturday, November 26, the cars serve passengers at stops:

  • every 5½ minutes, instead of every 6 minutes 15 seconds, Saturdays from about 7 until 10 p.m.; and
  • every 8 minutes 15 seconds, instead of every 8 minutes after about 10 p.m.

During most other times of the week, the TTC maintains service levels:

  • every 5½ minutes Sundays and holidays from about 7 until 10 p.m.;
  • every 3 minutes 20 seconds Mondays to Fridays during afternoon rush hours;
  • every 4½ minutes Saturdays from about 8 a.m. until noon; and
  • every 4 minutes Saturdays from about noon until 7 p.m.

During a few time periods, the TTC increases the frequency of service east of St Clair West Station:

  • every 9 minutes 20 seconds, instead of every 10 minutes, Sundays and holidays after about 10 p.m.;
  • every 6 minutes, instead of every 7 minutes, Mondays to Fridays after about 10 p.m.;
  • every 9 minutes, instead of every 9½ minutes, Saturdays before about 8 a.m.;
  • every 5½ minutes, instead of every 6 minutes 15 seconds, Saturdays from about 7 until 10 p.m.
