Buses replace streetcars on Bathurst,
starting November 20

Update — Friday, February 17, 8:06 a.m.: Exhibition Loop reopens 5 a.m. Saturday, February 18, 2017. Buses continue to replace streetcars along the 511 Bathurst route.

Update — Friday, January 20, 2017, 6:47 a.m.: Starting 6 a.m. today, the TTC again extends the route for buses operating along the 511 Bathurst route into Exhibition Place, instead of starting and ending trips in Princes’ Gate Loop. Construction in Exhibition Loop and the TTC detours continue until March 25. Buses and streetcars resume service into the loop starting Sunday, March 26.

Starting tomorrow, Sunday, November 20, the TTC resumes streetcar service along St. Clair Avenue.

With this service change and the ongoing problems with Bombardier not delivering enough Toronto Flexity low-floor streetcars to Toronto, the TTC is suddenly short of enough vehicles to operate streetcars along all of its routes.

To partially solve this problem, it will replace streetcars with buses along the 511 Bathurst route, also starting tomorrow.

Buses operate between Bathurst Station and Princes’ Gate Loop only, due to ongoing construction in Exhibition Loop.

Since streetcars carry more passengers than buses, the TTC will slightly increase the frequency of service along the 511 Bathurst route, while it operates the buses.

(Update — Friday, January 20, 2017, 6:47 a.m.)Streetcar service likely resumes in January, when more cars are available after construction projects have ended and Bombardier has delivered more cars. Construction in Exhibition Loop and the TTC detours continue until March 25. Buses and streetcars resume service into the loop starting Sunday, March 26.

The TTC continues to operate buses, instead of streetcars, along the 502 Downtowner and 503 Kingston Rd routes and some buses to bolster streetcar service along the 504 King route Mondays to Fridays during rush hours. It’s also canceled service along the 508 Lake Shore route indefinitely due to the streetcar shortage.

The TTC increases the frequency of service along the route at most times of the week. Buses replace streetcars, and, since they carry fewer passengers, it operates more vehicles than usually along the route and more frequently than the cars.

Starting Sunday, November 20, buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops along the route:

  • every 5 minutes, instead of every 6 minutes, Sundays and holidays from about 8 a.m. until noon;
  • every 4 minutes 15 seconds, instead of every 5 minutes, from about noon until 7 p.m.; and
  • every 5 minutes, instead of every 8 minutes, after about 7 p.m.
