City removing TTC streetcar platforms
at Bay / College, starting June 20

Update — Tuesday, July 12, 6:02 a.m.: The City and TTC reopened the intersection of College and Bathurst at 6 a.m. Monday, July 11. The TTC continues to revise or detour services due to other construction projects on College Street.

The City of Toronto is removing the TTC streetcar medians on College Street at Bay Street, starting Monday, June 20. City contractors work 60 metres (180 feet) west and 60 metres east of Bay Street on the north and south sides of College Street. They’ll block one traffic lane in each direction through the intersection.

The City is removing the platforms to meet the accessibility guidelines of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act or AODA. College Street is not wide enough to include platforms that appropriately serve TTC riders who use assistive devices. Crews will also adjust the corners and sidewalks to better serve the TTC’s new, low-floor Toronto Flexity streetcars. When work is complete, passengers will board streetcars from the sidewalk.

Although crews will finish most of the work by June 26, they’ll return for another day to lay new asphalt and paint permanent pavement markings.

For this project, crews will:

  • permanently remove the TTC streetcar platforms;
  • adjust the sidewalks to comply with AODA compliance and the new streetcars;
  • temporarily restore the roadway for traffic operations;
  • repair sidewalks for to improve accessibility; and
  • return Monday, July 11 to repave the road and install permanent line markings

Crews will generally work Mondays to Fridays from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. They may occasionally work after hours.

Cyclists and motorists will share the road through the intersection. The City is prohibiting parking in the active work zone. If you’ve parked your vehicle so that it blocks construction work, the City will relocate it with no charge to you. Call parking control at 416-808-2222 to learn the location of your vehicle.

Several construction projects, including this one, affect transit service along College Street this summer.

The TTC is detouring streetcars operating along these routes, during this particular project:
