New Street construction:
Burlington Transit detours start March 21



Update — Sunday, August 14, 5:45 p.m.: Most construction has ended and buses operating along the 10 New - Maple, 50 Burlington South late-evening and 52 Burlington Northwest late-evening routes have resumed regular service along New Street. Buses operating along the 4 Central and 300 Aldershot community connection route continue to detour along Caroline Street to access Central Park until September 3. BT further adjusts the schedules for buses operating along the 11 Sutton - Alton and 20 Burloak - Lakeshore routes to maintain connections at Appleby GO Station.


The City of Burlington is closing:

  • New Street near Drury Lane

during a joint project with the Region of Halton to:

  • replace the water main, asphalt, sidewalks and curbs on New Street between Martha Street and west of Guelph Line;
  • replace the water main, asphalt, sidewalks and curbs on New Street between east of Guelph Line and Cumberland Avenue;
  • replace the rehabilitate the waste-water sewer on New Street between Martha Street and Guelph Line;
  • replace the water main and waste-water sewer in the intersection of Drury Lane with Prospect Street;
  • replace the water main on Drury Lane north of Fairview Street; and
  • protect the water main from corrosion on Drury Lane between south of Prospect Street and New Street.

Region and City contractors are working on this huge project in two stages:

  • Stage 1: from March until November 2016; and
  • Stage 2: from February until September 2017.

During stage 1 this year, the City is closing New Street in three phases to accommodate the construction:

  1. between Seneca Avenue and Guelph Line - from Monday, March 21 until Thursday, June 5;
  2. between Martha Street and Guelph Line — from Monday, May 9 until Thursday, June 5; and
  3. between Martha Street and Seneca Avenue — from Friday, June 6 until Saturday, September 3.

Burlington Transit is detouring buses operating along these routes, while the street is closed:

  • 4 Central;
  • 10 New - Maple;
  • 50 Burlington South late-night;
  • 52 Burlington Northwest late-night;
  • 300 Aldershot community connection;
  • 301 Pinedale community connection; and
  • 302 Tansley Woods community connection.

To improve connections at Appleby GO Station, Burlington Transit is also adjusting the schedules for these routes during the construction:

  • 11 Sutton - Alton;
  • 20A Lakeshore - Burloak; and
  • 20B Burloak - Lakeshore.

300 Aldershot community connection

From Monday, May 9 until Saturday, September 3, eastbound buses operate along their regular route to Elizabeth and James Streets, then detour:

northward along Elizabeth; and then
eastward along Caroline Street and the Central Park access road to Teen Tour Way,
resuming their regular route northward along Teen Tour.

20B Burloak - Lakeshore

Burlington Transit is canceling service along the route from Monday, March 21 until Saturday, September 3.

These stops have no regular transit service (except for late-night service along the 50 Burlington South late-night route:

  • on New Street eastbound across from Timber Lane, at Adams Street, Meadowhill Road, west of Bower Court, at Hampton Heath Road, across from Deerhurst Drive and at Melores Drive and Schueller Court,
  • on Burloak Drive south of Eaton Avenue, at Spruce Avenue, Randolph Crescent and Winston Road, beside #75 Burloak and at Lakeshore Road,
  • on Lakeshore Road west of Burloak Drive, beside #5475 Lakeshore, at Hampton Heath Road, Kenwood Avenue, beside #5255 Lakeshore and west of White Pines Drive and Pineland Avenue and

20A Lakeshore - Burloak

From Monday, March 21 until Saturday, September 3, Burlington Transit is increasing the frequency of service along the route every day.

Starting Monday, March 21, buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops along the route:

  • every 15 minutes, instead of every 40 minutes, Mondays to Fridays.

Starting Saturday, March 26, buses serve passengers at stops along the route:

  • every 30 minutes, instead of every hour, Saturdays and Sundays.

BT is temporarily cancelling clockwise service around the New / Burloak / Lakeshore / Appleby loop along the 20B Burloak - Lakeshore route.

It also no longer interlines at Appleby GO Station the buses with buses operating along the 10 New - Maple route. Passengers must exit one bus and board another to continue their trips.

10 New - Maple

From Monday, March 21 until Saturday, September 3, inbound buses operate along their regular route to New Street and Guelph Line, then detour:

southward along Guelph;
westward along Lakeshore Road; and then
northward along Elizabeth Street to James Street,
resuming their regular route westward along James.

Inbound buses skip their regular stops

  • on New Street at Beverley Drive, beside the Burlington Central Library, west of Teen Tour Way, at Drury Lane and Lorne and Martha Streets and

Transit agencies often interline service along two or more bus routes with common terminals to save resources — meaning drivers and vehicles. Until March 21, Burlington Transit interlined at Appleby GO Station buses operating along the 10 New - Maple route with buses operating along the 20A Lakeshore - Burloak and 20B Burloak - Lakeshore routes. An outbound bus operating along route 10 would arrive at Appleby, then continue along either route 20A or 20B. It would complete a trip along one of those two routes before returning to Appleby. Then it would proceed inbound along route 10.
