As part of TTC’s commitment to provide accessible transit, work is underway at Dupont Station to install new elevators. Work started last September on Dupont Street west of Spadina Road to relocate underground utilities. Since mid-January, crews have been relocating overhead utilities.
The TTC expects to make Dupont Station accessible by the end of 2018, so it will block traffic lanes in the area for about two years. This longer-term work to improve the station includes:
- Three elevators so all passengers can access all levels of the station;
- Accessible fare gates;
- Barrier-free access to the subway platform;
- Better signs; and
- Closed-circuit television (CCTV) security cameras.
Crews start working on elevator 2 on the northwest corner of Dupont Street and Spadina Road later this month. During this part of the project, they’ll block traffic lanes in the northwest corner of the intersection for about one year, or until March 2017. This work includes excavating the elevator shaft in the City of Toronto’s right-of-way.
Once crews have finished elevator 2, they’ll start working on elevators 1 and 3 on the southeast corner. That part of the project blocks traffic lanes on the southeast corner for about one year, or until the end of 2018.
At least one lane of traffic in each direction is available for motorists while crews are installing the elevator. The work may delay, but will not otherwise affect TTC services along the 26 Dupont and 127 Davenport routes, although the TTC may temporarily relocate bus stops.
Crews will maintain access to the subway-station entrance at the northwest corner of Dupont and Spadina. They may also occasionally block sidewalks in the area. Signs will guide pedestrians to a safe route around the work zone.
For cyclist safety during this project, the TTC has temporarily removed bicycle parking at the northwest corner.
Crews generally work from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. each day. Occasionally they may work until 11 p.m. to complete the project as quickly as possible. You can expect construction-related noise and vibration during this work.
