GO Transit, UP Express adjust schedules
due to winter storm, March 2

Environment Canada has issued a winter storm warning for southern Ontario for this evening, Tuesday, March 1. This storm will likely affect local and regional transit services tonight and tomorrow, Wednesday, March 2.

Metrolinx is operating GO Transit and Union Pearson Express trains with special schedules tomorrow, to deal with the snowfall and to make sure passengers get to their destinations safely and efficiently.

GO is adjusting its schedule to allow it to operate as many trains as possible. It will focus on trips that do not require trains to switch from one track to another, which, in turn, reduces the likelihood of switch problems due to snow and ice build-up.

It will cancel some express trips, which usually require trains to switch to by-pass tracks, to concentrate on all-stop trips and make sure that as many passengers as possible get to where they’re going as promptly as possible.

It will continue to operate these express trips, which do not require trains to switch tracks:

  • the westbound express train leaving Oshawa at 7:53 a.m. for Union Station. The train serves all stops to Pickering, then operates express to Union.
  • the westbound express trains leaving Union at 5, 5:37 and 6 p.m. They operate express to Clarkson, then serve all stations to Hamilton.

UP Express trains operate every 30 minutes, instead of every 15 minutes, starting at 5:30 a.m. tomorrow.

Metrolinx contractors will inspect rail corridors, vehicles and equipment for frozen switches and doors to proactively prevent delays to passengers. Contractors will also work “around the clock” to clear parking lots, sidewalks and platforms of ice and snow.

In the event of extreme weather tomorrow, GO will keep stations open until the last train to offer a warm place for you to wait for your bus or ride home. Some stations and stops have heated shelters, some of which are customer activated. To activate heating in the shelter while you wait, simply press the button.

Be careful on train and bus platforms as they may be slippery. Take special care if you’re walking during periods of blowing wind and snow, which may reduce your ability to safely see where you’re going.

Plan ahead and give yourself a little extra travel time . Check in with @gotransit or @upexpress on Twitter, the GO Transit and UP Express websites and Facebook pages or local media for service updates.
