Starting this month, MiWay passengers at bus stops will hear external announcements from all MiWay buses.
The announcements include the route name, number and direction. This is the same service information that the buses’ destination signs display. The external announcements make sure that passengers of all abilities have access to the information they require. It also benefits all passengers waiting for buses at busy or noisy locations, or where buses operating along several routes serve a single stop.
MiWay already has voice and visual stop announcement systems inside buses to announce and display stop information, before the bus arrives at a stop. Prerecorded voice announcements name the next stops and on-board signs display the same information, allowing passengers to see or hear information about the next bus stop.
MiWay is launching external bus announcements to comply with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act. The act requires every conventional transportation service provider to make sure that verbal or electronic announcements are available to transit passengers before they board a transit vehicle.
