It’s designating the western half of the route, between Wellington Street West at York Street and Commissioners Street at Cherry Street as the 172 Cherry St via Esplanade route. (Long-time transit watchers may recall that the TTC previously operated a similar route from 2004 until 2008.)

Eastbound buses start their trips on Wellington Street West at York Street, then proceed:

northward along York;
eastward along King Streets West and East;
southward along Church Street;
eastward along The Esplanade;

Starting Monday, January 6, the TTC cancels all service along the route east of Kennedy Station. Instead, it transfers the resources it used to provide this service to bolster service along the 116B Morningside branch of that route, which also loops at Eglinton East and Kingston.

This means that all passengers traveling east and west along Eglinton Avenue East must transfer between buses in the Kennedy Station bus terminal to continue their journeys.

The TTC previously designated the service to Kingston Road as the main “34” branch of the route and the service to Kennedy Station only as the “34C” branch. Starting Sunday, January 6, it designates all buses serving the route as operating along the “34” branch.

The TTC is also increasing the frequency of service along the route.

Instead, buses serving the 97A branch operate between York Mills and Davisville Stations 18 hours a day Mondays to Saturdays and holidays and after 9 a.m. Sundays. These buses serve stops on Wilson Avenue and Yonge Boulevard and on Yonge Street south of Yonge Boulevard / Glen Echo Road. (97A buses previously only operated at all times of the week, except Monday-to-Friday midday.)

Buses serving the 97B branch operate between York Mills Station and Queens Quay Mondays to Fridays during rush hours. (97B buses previously operated only during rush hours between Steeles Avenue and Queens Quay.)

99 Arrow Rd

Starting Sunday, January 5, the TTC increases the running time - the amount of time it schedules for drivers to complete a round trip along the route - early Sunday-and-holiday mornings. This results in less frequent service, with buses dropping off and picking up passengers at stops along the route every 20 minutes, instead of every 15 minutes Sundays and holidays before 8 a.m.

The TTC is also increasing service at another time of the week.

21 Brimley

Starting Monday, January 6, the TTC increases the running time - the time it schedules for drivers to complete a round trip along the route — for buses operating along the 21B branch north of Scarborough Centre Station.

This results in less frequent service Mondays to Fridays during afternoon rush hours. Buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops along the route every 9 minutes, instead of every 8 minutes.

172 Cherry St

The TTC is separating the 72 Pape route into two routes, to overcome delays resulting from major construction projects in the Distillery District and at Union Station.

It’s designating the western half of the route, between Wellington Street West at York Street and Commissioners Street at Cherry Street as the 172 Cherry St via Esplanade route.

The reorganized service provides both and less frequent service along the route at various times of the week, than did buses operating along the 72 Pape route.

Starting Monday, January 6, buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops along the route every 15 minutes, instead of every 13 minutes, Mondays to Fridays during afternoon rush hours. They serve stops along the route every 30 minutes, instead of every 26 minutes, after 10 p.m.

41E Keele express

Starting Monday, January 6, the TTC increases the running time - the time it schedules for drivers to complete a round trip along the route - for buses operating along the route Monday-to-Friday during morning rush hours.

This results in less frequent service. Buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops along the route every 12½ minutes, instead of every 12 minutes.

However, as holiday service ends and regular service resumes, the TTC is also increasing the frequency of service along the route during morning rush hours.

70 O’Connor

Starting Monday, January 6, the TTC increases the running time - the time it schedules for drivers to complete a round trip along the route - for buses operating along the route early Monday-to-Friday to Friday evenings.

This results in less frequent service Mondays to Fridays from about 7:30 until 10 p.m. Buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops south of St. Clair Avenue East and O’Connor Drive every 11 minutes, instead of every 10 minutes. North of St. Clair and O’Connor, the buses serve stops every 22 minutes, instead of every 20 minutes.

The TTC is also increasing the frequency of service along the route Mondays to Fridays during rush hours.

72 Pape

The TTC is reorganizing the route so that drivers can maintain service on schedule during major construction projects in the Distillery District and at Union Station. It’s creating a new 72C branch of the route to provide service between Pape Station and the intersection of Commissioners Street with Cherry Street at most times of the week. The TTC also revives the former 172 Cherry St route to provide service through the construction zones along the west end of the route beyond Cherry and Commissioners Streets. (Buses will only operate to Eastern Avenue Sunday-and-holiday evenings.)

This results in more frequent service along some parts of the route and less frequent service along other parts.

For example, starting Sunday, January 5, buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops north of Queen Street East, every 12 minutes, instead of every 10 minutes Sundays and holidays from about 8 a.m. until 7 p.m.

Starting Monday, January 6, the buses serve the stops every 8 minutes, instead of every 7 minutes, Mondays to Fridays during morning rush hours. They serve the stops every 10 minutes, instead of every 8 minutes, from about 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. They serve the stops every 8 minutes, instead of every 6½ minutes, during afternoon rush hours. They serve the stops every 10 minutes, instead of every 8 minutes from about 7 until 10 p.m.

Starting Saturday, January 11, the buses serve the stops every 10 minutes, instead of every 7½ minutes, Saturdays from about 8 a.m. until 7 p.m.

The TTC is also decreasing service along one part of the route.

134 Progress

Starting Monday, January 6, buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops north of Centennial College’s Progress Campus every 24 minutes, instead of every 22 minutes, Mondays to Fridays from about 7 until 10 p.m.

The TTC is also increasing the frequency of service along the route west of Centennial College at various times Mondays to Fridays.

512 St. Clair

The TTC is building in more “recovery time” - the time between each trip along the route - into the schedules for the route Mondays to Fridays before 3 p.m. That results in slightly less frequent service during those times.

Streetcars drop off or pick up passengers at stops along the route every 2 minutes 36 seconds, instead of every 2½ minutes, during morning rush hours. They serve the stops every 5 minutes 5 seconds, instead of every 5 minutes, from about 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Since holiday service ends, the TTC is also increasing the frequency of service along the route Mondays to Fridays during afternoon rush hours.

85 Sheppard East

The TTC increases the running time - the time it schedules for drivers to complete a round trip along the route - for buses operating along the route Saturday, Sunday, and holiday mornings and afternoons.

This results in less frequent service. Starting Sunday, January 5, buses drop off or pick up passengers on Sheppard Avenue East west of Meadowvale Road and on Meadowvale Road between the Toronto Zoo and Sheppard East every 5½ minutes, instead of every 5 minutes Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from about 11 a.m. until 6 p.m.

East of Meadowvale Road, buses serve stops every 27&frac12 minutes, instead of every 25 minutes, Sundays and holidays from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. and every 22 minutes, instead of every 20 minutes, Saturdays from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Since holiday service ends, the TTC is also increasing the frequency of service along the route Mondays to Fridays during afternoon rush hours. It’s also adjusting the schedule of the route.

97 Yonge

Due to ongoing watermain construction on Yonge Street between Sheppard and Finch Avenues, the TTC is splitting the route into three branches to help keep buses on schedule.

Buses serving the 97A branch operate between York Mills and Davisville Stations 18 hours a day Mondays to Saturdays and holidays and after 9 a.m. Sundays. These buses serve stops on Wilson Avenue and Yonge Boulevard and on Yonge Street south of Yonge Boulevard / Glen Echo Road.

Buses serving the 97B branch operate between York Mills Station and Queens Quay Mondays to Fridays during rush hours.

Buses serving the 97C branch operate between Steeles Avenue and Lawrence Station 18 hours a day Mondays to Saturdays and holidays and after 9 a.m. Sundays.

The TTC no longer provides service between Davisville and St. Clair Stations Mondays to Fridays from about 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

As a result of this change, the TTC operates more frequent service along parts of the route and less frequent service along other parts.

Starting Sunday, January 5, buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops between Lawrence and Davisville Stations every 20 minutes, instead of every 15 minutes, Sundays and holidays from about 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. and after about 10 p.m. They serve the stops every 24 minutes, instead of every 15 minutes, from about 7 until 10 p.m.

Starting Monday, January 6, they serve the stops every 20 minutes, instead of every 15 minutes, Mondays to Fridays from about 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. and after 7 p.m.

Starting Saturday, January 11, they serve the stops every 24 minutes, instead of every 15 minutes, Saturdays before 8 a.m. They serve the stops every 20 minutes, instead of every 15 minutes after 8 p.m.

At all times of the week except during rush hours between Yonge Boulevard / Glen Echo Road and Lawrence Station, the TTC operates two branches of the route, with different frequencies, with buses serving the 97A branch operating every 20 minutes, and buses serving the 97C branch every 30 minutes. The means that sometimes passengers can expect long gaps between buses and sometimes buses will bunch up. Regardless at all times of the week, except during rush hours, at stops on this section of Yonge Street, passengers can expect less frequent service than previously, with buses operating every 20 or 30 minutes, instead of every 15 minutes

Revising the path for buses operating along routes

172 Cherry St
72 Pape

The TTC is splitting the 72 Pape route into two routes, to overcome delays resulting from major construction projects in the Distillery District and at Union Station.

It’s designating the western half of the route, between Wellington Street West at York Street and Commissioners Street at Cherry Street as the 172 Cherry St via Esplanade route.

It’s designating the eastern half of the route, between Pape Station and Cherry and Commissioners as the 72C Pape via Commissioners route.

Buses on both routes loop along Villiers and Munition Streets.

The TTC only operates buses along the main 72 Pape branch to Pape and Eastern Avenues Sundays and holidays after 7 p.m.

It’s cancelling the previous service along the main 97 branch between Steeles Avenue and Davisville Station — with buses operating at all times of the week except Monday-to-Friday midday — and the 97D branch between York Mills and St. Clair Stations via Yonge Boulevard — with buses operating only Monday-to-Friday midday.

The TTC no longer provides service between Davisville and St. Clair Stations Mondays to Fridays from about 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. along the 97C and 97D branches.

Adjusting the schedules of routes

11 Bayview

Starting Monday, January 6, the TTC no longer interlines buses operating along the route with buses operating along the 28 Davisville route Mondays to Fridays during rush hours.

Although the TTC still schedules the two routes to provide “blended” service along Davisville Avenue west of Cleveland Street, with buses serving the two routes dropping off or picking up passengers every 6 minutes, the routes will operate independently. In this way, delays along the longer 11 Bayview route no longer affect service along the shorter 28 Davisville route.

28 Davisville

Starting Monday, January 6, the TTC no longer interlines buses operating along the route with buses operating along the 11 Bayview route Mondays to Fridays during rush hours.

Although the TTC still schedules the two routes to provide “blended” service along Davisville Avenue west of Cleveland Street, with buses serving the two routes dropping off or picking up passengers every 6 minutes, the routes will operate independently. 25 Don Mills

Starting Monday, January 6, the TTC operates two more buses and increases the running time - the time it schedules for drivers to complete a round trip along the route - Mondays to Fridays during rush hours.

Together, this does not change service levels, since buses operate as frequently as usual - every 3 minutes 40 seconds.

However, the TTC is also increasing the frequency of service along the route, as holiday service ends and regular service resumes.

32 Eglinton West

Since November, the TTC has operated even more buses along the route to maintain the frequency of service at most times of the week during construction of the future Eglinton Crosstown light rail transit line. It operates six more buses along the route Mondays to Saturdays from about 7 a.m. until 11 p.m. and Sundays and holidays from about 9 a.m. until 10 p.m.

37 Islington

Starting Monday, January 6, the TTC adjusts trip times early in Monday-to-Friday mornings to provide a more evenly spaced service. The southbound bus that usually leaves the loop on Steeles Avenue West west of Islington Avenue at 6:10 a.m. leaves, instead, four minutes earlier at 6:07 a.m.

The TTC is also increasing the frequency of service along the route.

41 Keele

Since early December, construction of the future Finch West Station has no longer affected traffic along Keele Street and the TTC has ended its detour of buses operating along the route.

It’s operating one less bus along the route. The extra bus helped the TTC maintain service levels along the route during the construction Monday-to-Friday midday.

This does not change service levels, since buses operate as frequently as usual - about every 7 minutes.

However, the TTC is also increasing the frequency of service along the route Mondays to Fridays during rush hours, as holiday service ends and regular service resumes.

Making other changes to service along routes

34 Eglinton East

Until Saturday, January 4, the TTC operates buses along the route on two branches:

  • the 34 branch, with buses operating between Eglinton Station and Kingston Road Mondays to Fridays during rush hours; and
  • the 34C branch with buses operating between Eglinton and Kennedy Stations 18 hours a day seven days a week.

Starting Sunday, January 5, the TTC cancels all service east of Kennedy Station. It redesignates the service between Eglinton and Kennedy Stations (the former 34C branch) as the 34 branch.

97 Yonge

Unitl Saturday, January 4, the TTC schedules buses along the route on five branches:

  • the main 97 branch, operating buses between Steeles Avenue and Davisville Station at all times of the week, except Mondays to Fridays from about 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.;
  • the 97A branch, operating buses between York Mills Station and Davisville Station, via Yonge Boulevard at all times of the week, except Mondays to Fridays from about 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.;

Instead, it schedules buses along three branches:

  • the 97A branch, operating buses between York Mills Station and Davisville Station, via Yonge Boulevard at all times of the week;
  • the 97B branch, operating buses between York Mills Station and Queens Quay Mondays to Fridays during rush hours; and
  • the 97C branch, operating buses between Steeles Avenue and Davisville Station at all times of the week.

It’s cancelling the previous service along the main 97 and 97D branches. It also no longer provides service between Davisville and St. Clair Stations Mondays to Fridays from about 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Transit agencies often interline two or more routes with a common terminal to save the resources — meaning drivers and vehicles — they need to provide the services. For example at certain times of the week, after a bus operating along the 77 Swansea route arrives in Runnymede Station, it continues north of the station along the 71 Runnymede route. Having returned to the station after completing a round trip along 71 Runnymede, it again serves the 77 Swansea route.
