More Davis Drive rapidway construction,
starting December 2

Metrolinx and York Region contractors continue the project to build a rapidway — bus-only lanes in the centre of the roadway — along Davis Drive in Newmarket.

Next week, they’re starting three more parts of the project.

First, hydro crews continue working on the south side of Davis Drive between Prospect Street and the Southlake Regional Health Centre’s Davis Drive entrance to string wire and hang transformers, from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. Monday, December 2.

They’ll block the eastbound curb lane between Prospect Street and Roxborough Road, but access the hospital entrance will remain open. They’ll also block the sidewalk beside the construction zone. When walking to the hospital from Prospect and Davis, use the Prospect entrance of the pedestrian bridge through the Medical Arts Building. Obey signs and cross streets at intersections with signals.

York Region Transit will temporarily close the bus stop in from of the hospital. Instead, buses drop off or pick up passengers on Davis Drive at the southwest corner of Prospect Street.

Also starting Monday, December 2 from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. each day, crews are installing new gas mains at the intersection of Main Street and Davis Drive.

They’ll be digging and drilling on the south side of Davis to install new pipes. One at a time, they’ll close all the lanes on Main Street intermittently.

All businesses remain open during construction and all entrances to the businesses on or near Main Street remain accessible. YRT and GO Transit are relocating the bus stop on the southeast corner of Main and Davis during the work. Look for signs to direct you to the nearest available bus stop.

The work also closes the northeast sidewalk on Main. Directional signs will guide you to the nearest open sidewalk.

Traffic control personnel will be on the site, if necessary to manage traffic flow.

Work continues until December 16.

Starting Wednesday, December 3, crews are temporarily closing Vincent Street just north of Davis Drive to relocate underground storm sewer pipes and drains.

This is one of a few upcoming road closures on Vincent to complete infrastructure and road work. The contractors require more short-term road closures next year to remove curbs and sidewalks, widen the road around Vincent Street and Davis Drive, install new curbs and sidewalks and pave the work area on Vincent.

Business on Vincent Street businesses are open. Only a small segment of Vincent Street will be closed. However, the work prevents vehicle through traffic accessing Vincent from Davis. Detour signs will be in place to guide motorists around the closure. Pedestrian will be able to access Vincent Street.

Expect noise.

A portion of the north sidewalk on Davis Drive between Lorne Avenue and Vincent Street just east of Vincent Street will be closed. To safely reach the south sidewalk, please follow directional signs and cross at intersections with signals. Work hours are from about 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.; however, the road will remain closed overnight.

The work will not affect the westbound GO and YRT bus stop at Vincent and Davis.

Other aspects of the project continue to reduce Davis Drive to just two lanes — one westbound and one eastbound between Roxborough Road / Patterson Street and Yonge Street.

YRT passengers riding buses operating along the 44 Bristol, 50 Queensway, 54 Bayview, 55 / 55B Davis Drive, 58 Mount Albert and 520 / 521 Newmarket community bus routes and GO Transit express buses operating along the 65 Newmarket / Toronto route should expect delays.
