City closes Dufferin bridge:
TTC revises bus routes, June 12

Update — Tuesday, October 8, 9:53 p.m.: The City is closing the bridge to pedestrians and cyclists, too, as Metrolinx crews complete maintenance work on the underside of the bridge. The City is directing pedestrians and cyclists to gain access to Exhibition Place along Atlantic Avenue. It’s closing the bridge from 10 p.m. Wednesday, October 9 until Friday, October 18.

Recently a City of Toronto inspector revealed serious problems with the structural integrity of the bridge carrying Dufferin Street across the GO Transit tracks.

The City has decided to close the bridge to all motor vehicle traffic, starting today, Wednesday, June 12. (Pedestrians and cyclists can still cross the bridge).

Although the City had already drafted plans to replace the bridge, it’s closing it sooner than it expected. It had intended to erect a temporary bridge to carry traffic before it closed the current bridge and build a new permanent structure. However, building and opening that temporary bridge is at least a year to 18 months away.

Something you can look forward to is that construction of both the temporary and permanent bridges may eventually delay train service along GO’s 01 Lakeshore West line and, possibly, GO buses operating on the Frederick G. Gardiner Expressway, including the 16 Hamilton / Toronto express, 21 Milton / Toronto and 31 Guelph / Georgetown / Toronto routes. But that’s still a long while ahead…

29329316bridge_13100.gif In the meantime, the TTC is detouring buses that usually operate into Exhibition Place, affecting service along the 29 Dufferin, 316 Ossington overnight and 329 Dufferin overnight routes, starting today.

It’s also ending the previous detour routings for these routes, which it originally intended to continue until the end of June.
