MiWay revises routes and services, starting March 25

Starting Monday, March 25, MiWay is revising its services, performing a major rerouting in the Airport Corporate Centre area and increasing the frequency of service along two express routes, among other changes.

MiWay is completely overhauling rush-hour service to the Airport Corporate Centre west of Etobicoke Creek and the industrial lands further west. It’s replacing the current routes serving the area, 17 Timberlea and 50 Creekbank, with two new routes, 72 Timberlea and 73 Kamato, which provide more frequent and more direct service than the old routes.

The bad news for Toronto passengers is that the new routes will no longer extend to Islington subway station, instead ending at the Skymark Hub, where passengers must transfer to other buses continue to Islington Station.

MiWay is also operating more Monday-to-Friday trips along some current routes, most notably the 107 Malton express, 109 Meadowvale express, 20 Rathburn, and 38 Creditview.

Due to low service reliability on routes 22 Finch and 42 Derry since the last service changes, MiWay is decreasing the frequency of service along these routes Sundays and holidays.

The changes affect these routes: 1 Dundas; 3 Bloor; 13 Glen Erin; 17 Timberlea; 20 Rathburn; 22 Finch; 26 Burnhamthorpe; 29 Park Royal; 31 Folkway - Homelands; 34 Credit Valley; 35 Eglinton; 38 Creditview; 42 Derry; 43 Matheson-Argentia; 45 Winston Churchill; 48 Erin Mills; 50 Creekbank; 61 Mavis; 70 Keaton; 72 Timberlea; 73 Kamato; 82 Financial; 101 Dundas express; 107 Malton express; 109 Meadowvale express; 110 University Express; and 201 Dundas limited-stop.

Specifically, MiWay is: introducing new routes; cancelling current routes; revising the path of a current route; increasing service along current routes; decreasing service along current routes; increasing the frequency of service along current routes; decreasing the frequency of service along current routes; removing express route branding from current routes; and revising terminal stop locations.

Revising the path of a current route

34 Credit Valley

Starting Monday, March 25, MiWay slightly changes the path of the route through the Credit Valley Hospital grounds due to safety concerns. Buses no longer use Credit Valley Road to access the hospital, instead entering and exiting the east side of the hospital grounds directly onto Eglinton Avenue West, using the driveway west of Quenippenon Brook.

MiWay buses no longer serve two stop locations: on Credit Valley south of Eglinton, and on the hospital access road west of Credit Valley.

Increasing service along current routes

3 Bloor

Starting Monday, March 25, MiWay operates three new weekday trips along this route:

  • eastbound from City Centre/Square One at 7:39 a.m.
  • westbound from Islington Station at 6:44 and 7:59 p.m.

MiWay is adding these trips to more efficiently allocate buses after the increasing service along the 109 Meadowvale express route. They serve to move buses to and from Islington Station before and after they operate trips along the 70 Keaton and 82 Financial routes.

38 Creditview

Starting Monday, March 25, MiWay operates a few more short trips along Mondays to Fridays during rush hours.

  • A new southbound bus from Argentia Road at Creditview Road leaves at 6:09 a.m.
  • The current 6:44 a.m. southbound bus from Creditview at Highbrook Avenue leaves, instead, from Bancroft Drive at Emerson Lane at 6:35 a.m.
  • Buses operate three new trips from Creditview at Rathburn Road at 3:57, 5, and 5:30 p.m., all travelling to Argentia and then continuing on current eastbound trips along the 82 Financial route.

The new trips prepare passengers for regular short-turn trips between Erindale GO Station and the Bancroft area, which MiWay will introduce when GO Transit finishes its construction project at Erindale GO Station.

101 Dundas express

Starting Monday, March 25, MiWay operates more and longer Monday-to-Friday rush-hour trips along the route.

  • The current 3:59 p.m. westbound bus from UTM continues to Islington Station, leaving UTM at 3:18 p.m.
  • Two new eastbound buses leave UTM at 4:18 and 5:17 p.m.

MiWay is also decreasing service along the route and revising the schedules of the route.

Starting Monday, March 25, MiWay operates four new weekday rush hour trips along this route.

  • Eastbound from South Common Centre at 6:26, 7:07, and 7:49 a.m.
  • Westbound from Islington Station at 7:52 a.m.

MiWay is adding the eastbound trips to allocate buses allocated after the increasing service along the 109 Meadowvale express route. They serve to move buses to Islington Station before they operate trips along the 70 Keaton and 82 Financial routes.

MiWay cancelled the westbound trip last September to increase service along the 35 Eglinton route. Since it further increase service along route 35 in December, it no longer needs this bus this bus on that route, so MiWay is adding it back into service along route 201.

MiWay is also decreasing service along the route.

35 Eglinton

Starting Monday, March 25, MiWay operates another Monday-to-Friday westbound trip.

The buses that currently leave Islington Station at 5:27 and 5:34 p.m. trips from Islington Station leave instead, at 5:24 and 5:35 p.m. Another bus operates on new westbound trip along the 35A routing leaves at 5:30 p.m.

MiWay is also decreasing service and revising schedules on the route.

  • New short trips from Islington to Square One leave at 7:52, 8:31, 8:46 and 9:21 a.m.

MiWay intends the additional trips to attract riders to the route, preparing for the Mississauga bus rapid transit line (BRT), part of which it plans to open this fall.

MiWay is also revising schedules on this route.

20 Rathburn

Starting Monday, March 25, MiWay operates buses on several new Monday-to-Friday rush-hour trips along the route.

  • Eastbound from City Centre Terminal at 6:26 a.m.

Decreasing service along current routes

101 Dundas express

Friday, March 22 is the last day that MiWay operates buses on these two Monday-to-Friday trips.

  • Eastbound from Dundas Street at Mavis Road at 6:31 a.m.
  • Westbound from Islington Station at 6:45 p.m.

Currently, few passengers ride the buses operating on these trips are currently lightly, since they run bunched together with buses operating trips on the 201 Dundas limited-stop route. Starting Monday, March 25, the bus MiWay currently uses for the eastbound trip operates, instead, a new pair of trips on the 107 Malton express route and the bus it uses for the westbound trip operates on a new trip along the 3 Bloor route.

MiWay is also increasing service and revising schedules on this route.

201 Dundas limited-stop

Friday, March 22 is the last day that MiWay operates the buses operating on the Monday-to-Friday eastbound trips that leave South Common Centre at 5:12 and 6:03 a.m. The buses currently continue along the 17 Timberlea and 50 Creekbank routes once they reach Islington Station, so MiWay is cancelling the trips together with those routes.

MiWay will also reschedule two trips flanking these cancelled trips to maintain even loads on the remaining trips. The eastbound bus that currently leaves at 5:18 a.m. leaves, instead, at 5:15 a.m. and the bus that currently leaves at 5:58 a.m. leaves, instead, at 6:01 a.m.

MiWay is also increasing service along this route.

Increasing the frequency of service along current routes

35 Eglinton

Starting Saturday, March 30, buses serve stops every 30 minutes, rather than every 33, Saturday mornings and evenings.

107 Malton express

Starting Monday, March 25, MiWay operates more frequent service along the route Monday-to-Friday midday.

Between about 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., buses will serve stops every 18.5 minutes, instead of every 26 to 30 minutes. Service to Humber College also begins slightly earlier than currently, with a new pair of trips leaving City Centre Terminal at 6:20 a.m. and Humber College at 7:15 a.m.

Unlike the current schedule, the new schedule isn’t co-ordinated with the schedule for buses operating along the 22 Finch route. This means that the effective midday frequency between Westwood Mall and Humber College only increases slightly, from every 14 to every 12 minutes.

MiWay intends the additional trips to attract riders to the route, preparing for the Mississauga bus rapid transit line (BRT), part of which it plans to open this fall.

Decreasing the frequency of service along current routes

42 Derry

Starting Good Friday, Friday, March 29, MiWay operates buses on this route less frequently Sundays and holidays. Buses serve stops every 45 minutes, rather than every 40.

The change is due to the recent re-routing of the 22 Finch route around Humber College, which requires more time for buses to navigate than the old routing. Because MiWay interlines buses operating along the 22 Finch and 42 Derry routes, buses operate less frequently along both routes.

22 Finch

Starting Good Friday, Friday, March 29, MiWay operates buses on this route less frequently Sundays and holidays. Until about 9:30 a.m., buses serve stops every 35 minutes, rather than every 30. For the rest of the day, buses will serve stops every 45 minutes, rather than every 40.

The change is due to the recent re-routing around Humber College, which requires more time to navigate than the old routing.

Making changes to bus stops

South Common Centre

Buses operating along the 26 Burnhamthorpe, 29 Park Royal / 31 Folkway - Homelands and 110 University express routes stop at bays H, K, and I, instead of K, I, and H, respectively.

Transit agencies often interline buses operating along two or more routes that share a common terminal. For example, each eastbound bus operating along the 73 Kamato route continues along the 72 Timberlea route, after arriving at Skymark Hub. Each westbound bus operating along the 72 Timberlea route continues along the 73 Kamato route, after arriving at Skymark.
