More Davis Drive rapidway construction starts February 4

Metrolinx and York Region contractors continue the project to build a rapidway — bus-only lanes in the centre of the roadway — along Davis Drive in Newmarket.

To prepare for upcoming construction, contractors have built retaining walls at several sites along Davis, where the ground slopes toward the road. Starting Monday, February 4, crews will be working on another retaining wall and a small culvert near 230 Davis Drive, on the south side just east of Longford Drive. They’ll be working from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. each day for about five months until early July.

During this phase of the project, workers will be:

  • clearing landscaping, closing the traffic lanes and installing construction fencing around the work area;
  • digging out the work area;
  • building the retaining wall; and then
  • backfilling and restoring the area.

The work blocks the eastbound curb lane on Davis Drive around the work area — just east of Longford Drive. It will also close the sidewalk on the south side of Davis. Pedestrians must cross to the north sidewalk of Davis at intersections with signals — either Longford Drive or Lorne Avenue.

The Church of Christ at 230 Davis Drive will remain open and accessible during this work.

Although the work does not affect bus stops, GO Transit passengers riding express buses operating along the 65 Newmarket / Toronto route and York Region Transit buses operating along the 44 Woodspring / Bristol, 50 Queensway, 55 Davis Drive, 58A Leslie via Mount Albert and 520 / 521 Newmarket community bus routes should expect delays.

Expect noise.
