Keele / Finch subway construction continues until spring

TTC and City of Toronto contractors continue to work on the project to extend the 1 Yonge - University - Spadina subway northwest beyond Downsview Station to York University and Vaughan.

On Keele Street between Finch Avenue West and Toro Road, they’re working on backfilling the extraction shaft — the point where other crews removed the tunnel boring machines from the southern tunnels. Residents may hear construction-related noise from trucks and equipment at the site on the northeast corner of Keele and Toro.

Backfilling continues intermittently on this site — south of the future Finch West Station overnight until spring, except for Sunday nights, weather permitting.

For most construction projects, the City of Toronto’s normal working hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. However, the City has also approved a noise by-law amendment for major transit projects that allows contractors to perform overnight and weekend work throughout the project, if necessary, to lessen the impact on the local community.

In the area near the future Finch West Station, contractors may work from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m., seven days a week.

The City also allows tunnel construction with tunnel boring machines and similar activities, such as excavation, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for safety and efficiency.
