Information centre for two transit construction projects opens in Vaughan

Metrolinx, the TTC and the Region of York have opened a new information centre in Vaughan. Residents, workers and business operators can drop into the new facility to learn more about how two major transit construction projects will affect the area where they live and work:

  • extending the TTC’s 1 Yonge - University - Spadina subway northwest beyond Downsview;
  • and building a rapidway — bus-only lanes in the centre of the roadway — along Highway 7 West.

At the new office at 7800 Jane Street — on the northwest corner of Jane and Highway 7 — you can ask staff for more information about the projects, view project maps, provide feedback and pick up project brochures. The information centre is close to the construction zone for the subway project and for the upcoming rapidway project — near the future subway station, rapidway station and bus terminal.

The Vaughan Metropolitan Centre development area will be busy over the next few years with workers building the two transit construction projects at the same time. Although each project has separate project-management and construction teams and different funding arrangements, when complete they’ll together form an important hub for public transit in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.

The TTC and the City of Toronto are extending the subway 8.6 kilometres to the future Vaughan Metropolitan Centre Station at Highway 7 and Edgeley Boulevard / Interchange Way, just west of Jane Street. It includes six new stations and expands the subway beyond the limits of the City of Toronto for the first time. The TTC expects to open the new part of the subway line in fall 2016.

The rapidway along Highway 7 extends 3.5 kilometres from Interchange Way / Edgeley Boulevard to just east of Keele Street at Bowes Road and will include three new vivastations. Construction will start this year and Metrolinx and the Region of York also expect to complete the project in fall 2016, to coincide with the opening of the subway extension.

If you visit the new centre during an open house next week, Tuesday, January 29 from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, January 30 from 3 until 5 p.m. and Thursday, January 31 from 1 until 3:00 p.m. you can pick up free refreshments along with project information.

TTC staff are available to answer questions about the subway project Tuesdays from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., Wednesdays from 3 until 5 p.m. and Thursdays from 3 until 5 p.m.

Metrolinx / York Region staff are available to answer questions about the rapidway project Mondays from 9 a.m. until noon and Wednesdays from 2 until 6 p.m.
