TTC expresses condolences to family and co-workers
of employee killed by train this morning

At about 4:45 a.m. today, Friday, September 14, a work car struck and killed a TTC employee just north of Yorkdale Station. The train also injured another employee who is now in hospital with “non-life-threatening” injuries.

Peter Pavlovski, 49, had been a TTC employee since 1990. He was a road master - a subway track and tunnel foreman. The TTC says it’s “providing all the support and assistance available to Mr. Pavlovski’s family and co-workers at this very difficult time.”

The TTC’s Chief Executive Officer Andy Byford, on behalf of all TTC employees and TTC Chair Councillor Karen Stintz, on behalf of her fellow commissioners, expressed their sincere condolences to family, friends and co-workers of Mr. Pavlovski.

A crew of seven workers, under Mr. Pavlovski’s supervision, was working on the northbound track in the open-cut area of the subway line north of Yorkdale, when a southbound work car struck Mr. Pavlovski and another crew member. The TTC continues to investigate the incident and it is fully co-operating with police and the Ministry of Labour to fully understand the circumstances that led to this tragic event.

The 1 Yonge - University - Spadina subway line remains closed north of Lawrence West Station. Shuttle buses continue to operate between Downsview and Lawrence West.

Since part of the subway is closed, the TTC can’t operate many of the trains that it usually stores in the Wilson yard, affecting the frequency of service along the entire line. The TTC says its sending some of the trains that it usually operates along the 2 Bloor - Danforth subway line to bolster 1 Yonge - University - Spadina service, but that, in turn, affects service throughout the entire system. Trains are operating less frequently than usual. They’re currently dropping off and picking up passengers about every six minutes at stations along both lines .

Also, passengers riding buses on other routes should also expect less frequent service as long as part of the subway is closed. The TTC has to “borrow” buses from other routes to provide enough shuttle service to replace the subway. It’s operating 94 buses between Downsview and Lawrence West.
