Weekend events affect transit services, August 16, 17, 18, 19



Carrots, cacti, chili, corn dogs and cotton candy are centre-stage at some of the many special events that affect transit services this weekend.

The events take place in Bradford, Brampton, the Courtice area of Clarington, the Dundas area of Hamilton, the Georgetown area of Halton Hills, central Hamilton, the Lindsay area of Kawartha Lakes, central Markham, Oshawa, Toronto and the Unionville area of Markham affect transit services this weekend.

GO Transit and the TTC are increasing service to handle the crowds heading to the “Ex”.

Celebrate Yonge

The City of Toronto and the Downtown Yonge Business Improvement Area are setting up planters and barricades along

  • Yonge Street between Gerrard and Queen Streets,

narrowing the street to traffic and widening the sidewalks to set up restaurant patios and other areas for pedestrians to enjoy Toronto’s main street. The event continues from Thursday, August 16 until Sunday, September 16 and may affect TTC service.

From Thursday, August 16 until Sunday, September 16, passengers should expect delays. The TTC may relocate some bus stops.


A Midsummer Night’s Run

The City of Toronto is closing

  • Commissioners Street between Munition and Leslie Streets

to accommodate the run on Saturday evening. (Race participants support the Sick Kids Foundation at the Hospital for Sick Children.

Warriors Day Parade

On Warriors Day, Saturday, August 18, at the Canadian National Exhibition, past and present members of Canada’s Armed Forces march through the Princes’ Gates and along Princes’ Boulevard in Exhibition Place.

Veterans of Canada’s wars and peacekeeping missions gain free admission to the “Ex”.

Many local transit agencies — including Brampton Transit, Durham Region Transit, GO Transit, Grand River Transit, Guelph Transit, MiWay, the TTC and York Region Transit — offer free rides to vets and their companions.

The City of Markham is closing:

  • Main Street Unionville between Carlton Road and Station Lane

Friday evening and all day Saturday and Sunday

to accommodate the event.

Event organizers are providing free shuttle bus service from Unionville GO Station to the venue.

The event also affects York Region Transit service.

Free shuttle buses operate Saturday, August 18 between Unionville GO Station and the festival site from noon until 11 p.m., with the last shuttle leaving the site around 10:45 p.m. They also operate Sunday, August 19 from noon until 7 p.m., with the last shuttle leaving the site around 6:45 p.m.

After 6 p.m. Friday, August 17, buses operate along their regular route to Main Street Unionville and Highway 7, then detour:

eastward along Highway 7;
northward along Kennedy Road; and then
