Weekend events affect transit services, August 4, 5, 6



The Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival in central Toronto dominates the list of special events affecting transit services this weekend.

Other special events take place in Barrie, Brampton, the Downsview area of Toronto, the Georgetown area of Halton Hills, Guelph and the Lindsay area of Kawartha Lakes.

Barrie


Kempenfest

Barrie’s annual celebration of arts, music, crafts and culture takes place all weekend along the shores of Kempenfelt Bay (Lake Simcoe) in downtown Barrie.

All Barrie Transit routes

On Monday, August 6, unlike most statutory holidays, Barrie Transit is operating buses along all routes that usually have Sunday service. The buses operate every hour from about 9 a.m. until 7 p.m.

Kempenfest Park ‘n’ Ride Express shuttles

From 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Saturday, August 4, Sunday, August 5 and Monday, August 6, Barrie Transit is operating free bus service from two locations in Barrie and vicinity to the event. You can park at one of the shuttle terminals and ride a free shuttle bus to the event from:

  • the Allandale Recreation Centre (Bayview and Little Avenues). From 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Saturday, August 4, Sunday, August 5 and Monday, August 6, buses leave every 30 minutes from Allandale, stopping only at Allandale GO Station and then returning to Allandale.
  • Bayfield Mall (Bayfield and Coulter Streets). From 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Saturday, August 4, Sunday, August 5 and Monday, August 6, buses leave every 30 minutes from Coulter Street behind the mall, stopping only at Allandale GO Station and then returning to the mall. (The buses do not enter the mall parking lot.)

Lakeshore Shuttle

(Although Barrie Transit has confirmed that service operates from the downtown terminal, it has not confirmed the route between the terminal and the event. This post describes how the buses operated in previous years.)

From 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Saturday, August 4, Sunday, August 5 and Monday, August 6, Barrie Transit also operates free shuttle buses from the downtown Barrie Transit Terminal.

The buses operate on a circular, counterclockwise route.

Inbound buses start their trips at Minet’s Point Road and Lakeshore Drive, then proceed:

northward along Lakeshore and Toronto Street;
eastward along Simcoe Street;
northward along Mary Street; and then
eastward into the Downtown Barrie Transit Terminal.

Buses stop along Lakeshore Drive at Minet’s Point Road, the South Shore Centre Shop, Tiffin Street and Victoria Street.

Outbound buses leave the Downtown Barrie Transit Terminal; then proceed:

northward along Maple Avenue;
eastward along Ross Street;
southward along Bayfield Street;
eastward along Collier Street;
southward along Mulcaster Street;
westward along Simcoe Street;
southwardalong Toronto Street and Lakeshore Drive;
westward along Tiffin Street;
southwestward along Essa Road;
westward along Burton Avenue; and then
northward along Minet’s Point Road; and then
westward along Lakeshore Drive to a stop just west of Minet’s Point Road, ending their trips.

Outbound buses stop on Collier Street at Bayfield Street, on Simcoe Street at Fred Grant Square and Bayfield Street, on Toronto Street at Lakeshore Drive and on Lakeshore Drive at Victoria and Tiffin Streets. They then operate without stopping to the stop on Lakeshore, west of Minet’s Point Road.


Brampton


Downtown Brampton Farmers Market

The City of Brampton is closing

  • Main Streets North and South between Nelson and Wellington Streets

from 6 a.m. until 2 p.m. every Saturday until October 6 to accommodate the weekly farmers market.

Brampton Transit is detouring bus service during the market.

2 Main

From 6 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday, August 4, southbound buses operate along their regular route to Main Street North and Nelson Street, then detour:

westward along Nelson Street West, passing, but not stopping at, the Downtown Transit Terminal,
southward along George Streets North and South; and then
eastward along Wellington Street West to Main South,
resuming their regular route southward along Main.

Southbound buses skip their regular stop

  • on Main Street at Queen Street.

Northbound buses reverse the detour routing.

Northbound buses skip their regular stops

  • on Main Streets South and North at Wellington Street, John Street, north of Queen Street and at Theatre Lane.

Rogers Cup

York University is closing

  • Shoreham Drive between Murray Ross Parkway and Ian Macdonald Boulevard / The Pond Road

in front of Tennis Canada’s Rexall Centre to accommodate the international men’s tennis championship.

York Region Transit is detouring buses during the event.

Viva orange

From Saturday, August 4, until Sunday, August 12, eastbound buses operate along their regular route to Jane Street and Steeles Avenue West, then detour:

eastward along Steeles West; and then
southward along Northwest Gate to Ian Macdonald Boulevard,
resuming their regular route eastward along Ian Macdonald.

Eastbound buses serve all vivastations.

Westbound buses operate along their regular route to Ian Macdonald Boulevard and Founders Gate, then detour:

northward along Founders; and then
westward along Steeles Avenue West to Jane Street,
resuming their regular route northward along Jane.

Georgetown Farmers Market

The Town of Halton Hills is closing

  • Main Street South Georgetown between James and Church Streets

to accommodate the Georgetown Central Business Improvement Area’s weekly market.

GO Transit is detouring bus service during the market every Saturday until October 20.

31A / 31E / 31F Guelph / Georgetown / Toronto

From 6:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday, August 4, eastbound buses from Guelph operate along their regular route to Main and Guelph Streets (Provincial Highway 7) and then proceed:

southeastward along Guelph to Mill Street,
resuming their regular route southwestward along Guelph.

Eastbound buses skip their regular stops

  • on Main Street South opposite Cross Street and at Wesleyan Street and
  • on Mill Street at Guelph Street.

Westbound buses reverse the detour routing.

Westbound buses skip their regular stops

  • on Mill Street south of Guelph Street and
  • on Main Street South opposite Wesleyan Street and at Cross Street.

Buses that usually start or end their trips at Georgetown operate to and from the Georgetown GO Station, instead of Main Street South and Wesleyan Street, and do not travel through downtown Georgetown. The buses leave the GO station at the same time as usual, according to their regular schedule.


Guelph


Lions’ ‘Show and Shine’ Classic Car Display

The City of Guelph is closing:

Wyndham Street from Woolwich Street to Macdonell Street, Cork Street from Dettmer’s to Wyndham, Quebec Street from Baker Street to Wyndham, and Douglas Street.

  • Quebec Street between Baker Street and St. George’s Square (Wyndham Street North),
  • Wyndham Street North between Woolwich and Macdonell Streets
  • and other streets near St. George’s Square

all day Sunday to accommodate the annual event for the Downtown Guelph Business Improvement Area and the Lions Club of Guelph.

Guelph Transit is detouring buses while the street is closed.

10 Imperial

All day Sunday, August 5, inbound buses operate along their regular route to Paisley and Norfolk Streets, then detour:

southward along Norfolk; and then
eastward along Macdonell Street to Wyndham Street North,
resuming their regular route eastward along Macdonell.

All day Sunday, August 5, inbound buses operate along their regular route to Eramosa Road and Woolwich Street, then detour:

clockwise through Guelph Central Station bus terminal,
ending their trips at platform 18, as usual.

Inbound buses skip their regular stop

  • on Wyndham Street North south of Quebec Street at St. George’s Square, beside RBC Royal Bank of Canada.

Instead, inbound buses drop off passengers at a temporary stop

  • on Woolwich Street beside the Sleeman Centre.

From 7 a.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday, August 4, inbound buses operate along their regular route to Victoria Avenue North and Peel Street, then detour:

westward along Kent Street West to Victoria Avenue North,
resuming their regular route westward along Kent West.

Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival Grand Parade

As usual, the City of Toronto is closing

  • Lake Shore Boulevard West between Strachan Avenue and Colborne Lodge Drive

all day on Saturday to accommodate the annual Grand Parade.

Exhibition Place is also closing several roads to traffic all day Saturday to accommodate the large crowds attending the event.

GO Transit and the TTC are increasing services to handle the large number of people attending the events.

GO Transit
65 Barrie

GO operates its regular train service along the line Saturday, August 4.

Regular southbound trains leave Allandale Waterfront GO Station in Barrie at 10:20 a.m. and 5 p.m. They serve all stations along the line, arriving in Union Station at 11:58 a.m. and 6:38 p.m. More regular southbound trains leave East Gwillimbury GO Station at 1:50, 4:12, 8 and 10:55 p.m. They arrive in Union at 2:21, 5:13, 9:01 and 11:56 p.m.

If you’re heading to the parade, board the special westbound train operating along the 09 Lakeshore East line, leaving Union Station at 12:10 p.m. and arriving in Exhibition GO Station at 12:16 p.m. Or, if you’re heading to the Exhibition or points west for other activities, board regular westbound trains operating along the 01 Lakeshore West line leaving Union at 2:43, 5:43, 6:43 and 9:43 p.m. Saturday or 12:43 a.m. Sunday. The trains arrive at Exhibition GO Station at 2:49, 5:49, 6:49 and 9:49 p.m. and 12:49 a.m.

If you’re returning from the parade, board regular eastbound trains operating along the 01 Lakeshore West line to return to Union. The trains leave Exhibition GO Station at 11 a.m. and 2, 5, 9 and 11 p.m., arriving in Union at 11:10 a.m. and 2:10, 5:10, 9:10 and 11:10 p.m. Or, board the special eastbound train operating along the 09 Lakeshore East line, leaving Exhibition at 6:33 p.m. and arriving in Union at 6:43 p.m.

Northbound trains leave Union for Allandale Waterfront GO Station at 5:25 p.m. Saturday and 12:10 a.m. Sunday. They arrive in Allandale at 7:02 p.m. and 1:45 a.m. More regular northbound trains leave Union at 12:10, 3:01, 6:50 and 9:41 p.m. Saturday. They arrive in East Gwillimbury at 1:09, 4, 7:49 and 10:40 p.m.

31 Kitchener

GO operates a special eastbound train, leaving Georgetown GO Station at 11:17 a.m. The train serves all stations along the line east of Georgetown, arriving in Union Station at 12:25 p.m. The train then continues to Exhibition GO Station, arriving at 12:31 p.m.

It also operates a special westbound train, leaving Exhibition GO Station at 6:44 p.m. The train arrives in Union Station at 7 p.m. and then serves all stations along the line until Georgetown, ending its trip at 8:01 p.m.

09 Lakeshore East

GO operates an extra westbound train, leaving Oshawa GO Station at 11:11 a.m. The train serves all stations along the line, arriving in Union Station at 12:10 p.m. The train then continues to Exhibition GO Station, arriving at 12:16 p.m.

It also operates an extra eastbound train, leaving Exhibition GO Station at 6:33 p.m. The train arrives in Union Station at 6:43 p.m. and then serves all stations along the line, arriving at Oshawa GO Station at 7:38 p.m.

Throughout the weekend, as usual, all other westbound 09 Lakeshore East trains continue to Exhibition GO Station and all other stations along the 01 Lakeshore West line after they leave Union Station. All eastbound 01 Lakeshore West trains continue beyond Union Station to serve all stations along the 09 Lakeshore East line.

01 Lakeshore West

GO operates an extra eastbound train, leaving Aldershot GO Station at 11:34 a.m. The train serves all stations along the line, arriving in Exhibition GO Station at 12:30 p.m. It then continues to Union Station, arriving at 12:40 p.m.

It also operates an extra westbound train, leaving Union Station at 6:13 p.m. and Exhibition GO Station at 6:19 p.m. The train then serves all stations along the line, arriving at Aldershot GO Station at 7:18 p.m.

Throughout the weekend, as usual, all other eastbound 01 Lakeshore West trains continue beyond Union Station to serve the 09 Lakeshore East line. All westbound 09 Lakeshore East trains continue beyond Union Station to Exhibition GO Station and all other stations along the 01 Lakeshore West line.

21 Milton

GO operates a special eastbound train, leaving Milton GO Station at 10:28 a.m. The train serves all stations along the line, arriving in Union Station at 11:30 a.m. It then continues to Exhibition GO Station, arriving at 11:36 p.m.

In the evening, board the regular eastbound train operating along the 01 Lakeshore West line that leaves Exhibition GO Station at 6 p.m. The train arrives in Union Station at 6:10 p.m., where you can transfer to a special westbound train operating along the 21 Milton line.

The train leaves Union at 6:30 p.m., serves all stations along the line and arrives in Milton at 7:28 p.m.

12 Niagara Falls

GO operates its regular train service along the line Saturday, August 4.

Niagara Falls-bound trains leave Union Station at 9 a.m., 4:15 and 8:10 p.m. They leave Exhibition GO Station at 9:06 a.m., 4:21 and 8:16 p.m. They arrive in the Niagara Falls VIA Rail Station at 11:04 a.m., 6:19 and 10:22 p.m.

Toronto-bound trains leave Niagara Falls at 11:30 a.m. and 7:20 and 10:30 p.m. They leave the Exhibition at 1:24 and 9:14 p.m. Saturday and 12:24 a.m. Sunday. They end their trips in Union Station at 1:34 and 9:24 p.m. and 12:34 a.m.

61 Richmond Hill

GO operates a special southbound train, leaving Richmond Hill GO Station at 11:34 a.m. The train serves all stations along the line, arriving in Union Station at 12:20 p.m. It then continues to Exhibition GO Station, arriving at 12:26 p.m.

It also operates a special northbound train, leaving Exhibition GO Station at 6:19 p.m. The train leaves Union Station at 6:30 p.m., then serves all stations along the line, arriving in Richmond Hill at 7:13 p.m.

511 Bathurst

All day Saturday, August 4, streetcars operate more frequently than usual to accommodate the large numbers of people heading to and from the parade. The TTC usually sets up crash gates and assigns extra staff to handle the crowds at Exhibition Loop. Passengers pay their fares when they enter the loop and can board streetcars through both the front and rear doors.

2 Bloor - Danforth subway

Although the TTC has not announced any extra service this year, it will likely operate extra trains along the line all day Saturday, August 4.

Caribbean Carnival express shuttles

All day Saturday, August 4, three express shuttles whisk parade-goers from the 1 Yonge - University - Spadina or 2 Bloor - Danforth subway lines to the lakeshore. The buses operate without stopping every two to four minutes from:

  • Keele Station along Keele Street and Parkside Drive to Parkside and Lake Shore Boulevard West. (Buses drop off and pick up passengers on the south side of Lake Shore West near the Palais Royale and footbridge.) You won’t need to pick up a transfer when you pay your fare to connect with the subway or buses at Keele Station.
  • Lansdowne Station along Lansdowne Avenue, Queen Street West and Jameson Avenue to Lake Shore Boulevard West. (Buses stop on the south side of the westbound lanes of Lake Shore, then loop north along Dunn and Springhurst Avenues to Jameson.) You’ll need to pick up a transfer when you pay your fare to connect with the subway or buses at Lansdowne Station.
  • Union Station along Bay Street, Lake Shore Boulevard West, Fort York Boulevard and Fleet Street to Exhibition Loop. Board the buses on the west side of Bay Street, just south of Front Street West. The TTC usually sets up crash gates and assigns extra staff to handle the crowds at Exhibition Loop. Passengers pay their fares when they enter the loop and can board buses through both the front and rear doors. Buses return downtown along Fleet, Fort York, Lake Shore, Harbour, York and University, ending their trips beside St. Andrew Station. You’ll need to pick up a transfer when you pay your fare to connect with buses at Union Station or with the subway at St. Andrew Station.
108 Downsview

Although the TTC has not announced any extra service this year, it will likely operate extra buses along the route all day Saturday, August 4.

29 Dufferin

All day Saturday, August 4, buses operate more frequently than usual to accommodate the large numbers of people heading to and from the parade. The TTC usually sets up crash gates and assigns extra staff to handle the crowds at Dufferin Gate Loop. Passengers pay their fares when they enter the loop and can board buses through both the front and rear doors.

All buses start and end their trips at Dufferin (Gate) Loop. Buses do not operate to the Princes’ Gates along the 29D branch.

  • on Saskatchewan Road east of Dufferin Street,
  • on Manitoba Drive east of Saskatchewan Road, at Nova Scotia Avenue and across from the Exhibition (East) Loop and
  • in the Princes’ Gate Loop.

Northbound buses skip their regular stops

  • in the Princes’ Gate Loop,
  • on Princes’ Boulevard beside the Direct Energy Centre,
  • on Nunavut Road north of Princes’ Boulevard,
  • on Manitoba Drive west of Nova Scotia Avenue,
  • on Saskatchewan Road west of Manitoba Drive and at Dufferin Street.
329 Dufferin overnight

From about 2 until 5 a.m. Saturday, August 4, the TTC is detouring buses operating along the route.

Southbound buses operate along their regular route to Dufferin (Gate) Loop, then proceed:

northward along Dufferin Street;
eastward along Liberty and East Liberty Streets;
southward along Strachan Avenue; and then
westward along Manitoba Drive and the loop access road into Exhibition (East) Loop,
ending their trips.

Southbound buses skip their regular stops

  • on Saskatchewan Road east of Dufferin Street,
  • on Manitoba Drive east of Saskatchewan Road, at Nova Scotia Avenue and across from the Exhibition (East) Loop.

(The buses end their trips inside the loop, instead of on Manitoba Drive beside the loop.)

Northbound buses start their trips at the Exhibition (East) Loop, then proceed:

eastward along the loop access road and Manitoba Drive;
northward along Strachan Avenue;
westward along East Liberty and Liberty Streets;
southward along Dufferin Street;
westward along Springhurst Avenue;
southward along Fort Rouille Street; and then
eastward into Dufferin Loop; and then
resuming their regular route northward along Dufferin.

Northbound buses skip their regular stops:

  • on Manitoba Drive at Exhibition (East) Loop and west of Nova Scotia Avenue,
  • on Saskatchewan Road west of Manitoba Drive and at Dufferin Street.
509 Harbourfront

All day Saturday, August 4, buses operate more frequently than usual to accommodate the large numbers of people heading to and from the parade. The TTC usually sets up crash gates and assigns extra staff to handle the crowds at Exhibition Loop. Passengers pay their fares when they enter the loop and can board buses through both the front and rear doors.

35 Jane

Although the TTC has not announced any extra service this year, it will likely operate extra buses along the routes all day Saturday, August 4.

504 King

All day Saturday, August 4, the TTC operates more frequent service along the route between Dundas West Station and Roncesvalles Avenue at Queen Street West / The Queensway. Short-turn streetcars operate along Dundas Street West and Roncesvalles, then head west along The Queensway to Sunnyside Loop to turn around.

47 Lansdowne

The TTC is operating extra buses along the route all day Saturday, August 4.

316 Ossington overnight

From about 2 until 5 a.m. Saturday, August 4, the TTC is detouring buses operating along the route.

Southbound buses operate along their regular route to Strachan Avenue and Manitoba Drive / Fleet Street, then detour:

westward along Manitoba and the loop access road into Exhibition (East) Loop,
ending their trips.

(The buses end their trips inside the loop, instead of on Manitoba Drive beside the loop.)

Northbound buses reverse the detour routing.

80 Queensway

The TTC is operating extra buses along the route all day Saturday, August 4. Expect delays on Lake Shore Boulevard West between Colborne Lodge and Parkside Drives.

1 Yonge - University - Spadina subway

Although the TTC has not announced any extra service this year, it will likely operate extra trains along the line all day Saturday, August 4.

Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival Beyond Da Lime

The TTC is operating extra service to help carnival-goers jump-up all day Sunday at Polson Pier.

72 Pape via Commissioners & Cherry Beach

All day Sunday, August 5, the TTC is operating extra service along the route between Pape and Union Stations.


Inbound buses operate toward downtown.

Outbound buses operate away from downtown.
