The TTC project to upgrade the tracks, wiring and passenger platforms along Spadina Avenue, which saw the TTC operate buses, instead of streetcars, along the 510 Spadina route affects a major intersection along the right-of-way for two weeks, starting Monday, July 9.
The City of Toronto is closing:
- the entire intersection of Queen Street West and Spadina Avenue,
- Queen Street West — eastbound between Bathurst Street and Spadina Avenue and westbound between University and Spadina Avenues. (Local eastbound vehicles can operate as far east as Cameron Street; local westbound vehicles can operate as far west as Peter Street/)
- Spadina Avenue — southbound between Dundas and Queen Streets West and northbound between King and Queen Streets West. (Local southbound vehicles can operate as far south as Grange Avenue; local northbound traffic can operate as far north as Richmond Street West).
During this phase of the work, the contractors will completely rebuild the streetcar tracks and passenger platforms, resurface the road and repair some sidewalks and curbs. Work crews will bring rail panels and other equipment and material on flat-bed trucks and temporarily store the rails and equipment until they’re ready to install the new rails.
They’ll also place safety barricade fences around the intersection, providing a safe barrier between the work and pedestrians. They’ll maintain pedestrian access to businesses and walkways on both sides of all roads during construction.
The contractors generally will be working from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m., Mondays to Fridays, and from 9 a.m. until 11 p.m. Saturdays. However, parts of this project particularly the work in reconstructing the tracks — require periods of overnight work and extended weekend hours. During those extended hours, the TTC may move rail into position, then install, weld and grind the rails. The TTC requires after-hours work to support the construction that takes place during the daytime and to finish the project as quickly as possible.
The TTC is detouring streetcars operating along the 301 Queen overnight and 501 Queen routes and buses operating along the 510 Spadina route, while the streets are closed.

You can transfer between streetcars operating along the 501 Queen route and subway trains operating along the 1 Yonge - University - Spadina line at King and St. Andrews Stations, instead of Queen and Osgoode Stations, while the streetcars are detouring.
The TTC is not operating buses to replace the streetcars. You’ll have to walk south to King Street or north to Dundas Street to board cars operating east and west through downtown Toronto.
The TTC continues to detour streetcars operating along the 301 Queen overnight and 501 Queen routes during another construction project on Queen Street East between Vancouver and Coxwell Avenues.
Due to that earlier project on the east-end of the line, the TTC has also replaced streetcars operating along the 502 Downtowner route with buses. Since the buses only operate as far west as Parliament Street, the TTC also added some short-turn streetcars between Russell Carhouse and McCaul Loop. (McCaul is the usual western terminal for the 502 cars.)
Starting Wednesday, June 20, the TTC started replacing the tracks on McCaul Street, so it extended the short-turn cars to operate further west along Queen Street West to Bathurst Street. The cars then proceeded northward along Bathurst Street to turn around through Wolseley Loop, just one block north of Queen West.
Now the Queen / Spadina construction requires the TTC to shorten the route for the short-turn cars, which now operate only as far west as York Street.
Mondays to Fridays from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m., eastbound short-turn cars start their trips on York Street, south of Queen Street West, then proceed:
