Strachan overpass project blocks street, TTC detours buses,
June 11 to July 5

Update — Sunday, July 22, 5:47 p.m.: Construction again blocks the southbound lanes of the same section of Strachan Avenue, starting tomorrow, Monday, July 23 until Friday, August 3. The TTC is again detouring southbound buses.

Update — Monday, July 2, 6:01 a.m.: Construction continues until Thursday, July 5, and not Sunday, July 1, as Metrolinx previously announced.

The City of Toronto is closing

  • Strachan Avenue between Douro Street / Wellington Street West and East Liberty Street

for about three weeks, starting Monday, June 11 to accommodate Metrolinx contractors who are building an overpass to carry Strachan Avenue across the GO Transit right-of-way.

The new overpass is part of the ongoing project to improve the infrastructure along the “Georgetown South” rail corridor, including accommodating the future Air Rail Link between Toronto Pearson International Airport and Union Station.

During construction, the contractors will raise Strachan Avenue by about two metres (six feet) to pass over the rail corridor. In turn, they will lower the rail corridor from Bathurst Street to King Street West, with the lowest point about 8 metres (24 feet) below Strachan Avenue. The new overpass will also accommodate bicycle lanes and sidewalks.

The TTC is detouring buses operating along the 63 Ossington and 316 Ossington overnight routes during the work, starting Sunday, June 10.

While the street is closed, the contractors will connect the new sewer tunnel chamber under Strachan Avenue.

The work blocks the street to all through traffic. Although the west sidewalk will be closed, pedestrians can still use the east sidewalk. Toronto Police Service officers will direct motorists and pedestrians.

Metrolinx has scheduled contractors to work Mondays to Fridays from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. If necessary, they may continue working Sundays from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.
