Buses replace streetcars on Queen East and Kingston Road,
starting May 6

Update — Monday, July 23, 6:10 p.m.: The intersection of Queen Street West and Spadina Avenue has reopened and short-turn streetcars are again operating to Wolseley Loop.

Update — Monday, July 9, 9:57 p.m.: Since the TTC is rebuilding the entire rail junction of Queen Street West and Spadina Avenue, starting today, it’s shortening the route of the short-turn 501 Queen cars to York Street.

Update — Monday, June 20, 11:44 p.m.: Since another project to rebuild the tracks on McCaul Street starts today, the TTC is extending the route of the short-turn 501 Queen cars to Wolseley Loop on the east side of Bathurst Street, just north of Queen Street East.

Next week, the City of Toronto and the TTC start working on two projects on Queen Street East between Coxwell and Vancouver Avenues. (Vancouver Avenue is one block east of Greenwood Avenue.)

The City is starting a project to replace the sewers, watermains and sidewalks. At the same time, the TTC is upgrading the streetcar tracks between Coxwell and the Russell Carhouse (at Queen Street East and Connaught Avenue). Further east, starting in June, the City is replacing the watermains along Kingston Road between Victoria Park Avenue and Main Street / Southwood Drive.

Starting Sunday, May 6, the TTC is detouring streetcars operating along the 301 Queen and 501 Queen routes. It’s also canceling service along the 502 Downtowner and 503 Kingston Rd routes until construction ends.

During the work, shuttle buses replace streetcars on Kingston Road, Mondays to Fridays from about 5:30 a.m. until 7 p.m. The buses operate between Bingham Loop and Broadview Avenue. (Buses operating along the 22A Coxwell and 322 Coxwell overnight routes continue to operate along Kingston Road Monday-to-Friday evenings and overnight and 24 hours a day Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.)

Shuttle buses also replace streetcar service on Queen Street East, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The buses operate between Neville Park Loop and Broadview during regular service hours and between Neville and University Avenue overnight.

During the work, the TTC is also detouring buses operating along the 31B Greenwood extension to the Canada Post facility on Eastern Avenue.

Construction continues until October.

Passengers who usually ride streetcars along Kingston Road will not be able into ride downtown without transferring to streetcars operating along the 501 Queen route. Although the TTC will operate some short-turning streetcars to loop at McCaul Street, replacing the regular 502 Downtowner route, it will not be replacing service along King and Wellington Streets where streetcars serving the 503 Kingston Rd tripper route usually operate.

Since construction blocks the eastern tracks leading to and from Russell Carhouse, expect minor delays and schedule changes for streetcars operating along the 306 Carlton overnight and 506 Carlton routes during the constrution period. Some cars enter and leave regular service at Gerrard Street East and Broadview Avenue, instead of Gerrard East and Coxwell Avenue, while access to the carhouse is blocked.
