Niagara-on-the-Lake launches local transit service, April 2

The Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake launches its local transit service next Monday, April 2.

The Town has awarded a three-year contract to partners Niagara Classic Transport and Niagara Patient Transfer.

The transit schedule continues the seasonal shuttle between Fort George and the Historic Old Town District, and a new year-round, conventional route linking the communities of Old Town, Virgil and Glendale.

Passengers may ride the buses free of fare for the first week, from Monday, April 2 until Saturday, April 7. The buses do not operate Good Friday, April 6.

By creating a public transit system, the Town is now eligible to apply for funds from the Province of Ontario’s dedicated gas tax funds for public transportation program. The Town currently provides roughly $165,000 in funding for the current shuttle services, which Niagara Classic Transport currently operates.

The current token system for taxi or community shuttle services will only be available until April 2, when the new system with wheelchair access begins. Residents who can’t board the regular bus, and whose destination is within the service area of Old Town, Virgil and Glendale or within 175 meters of Regional Road 55 / Taylor Road during the service hours of 7:45 a.m. until 6:45 p.m. can apply for subsidized curb-to-curb specialized transit service.

The Town’s 2012 expenditure for the new transit service includes operational, administrative and communications costs, as well as start-up costs for signage and bicycle racks.

When Town staff factor in potential revenue sources, including gas tax funding, the additional cost to Town for this service is about $62,000 for 2012.

Main route

Buses start operating Monday, April 2, with the first bus leaving the Old Town Courthouse at 7:45 a.m. Conventional buses operate between Old Town and the Glendale campus of Niagara College every hour from 7:45 a.m. until 6:45 p.m. Mondays to Saturdays, except statutory holidays.

Two buses operate each morning directly from the courthouse to Niagara College and one operates directly each afternoon between the college and the courthouse. All other buses operating along the route start and end their trips at the Niagara-on-the-Lake community centre.

At Niagara College, passengers can connect with Niagara Falls Transit, St. Catharines Transit Commission and Welland Transit buses to travel to other points in Niagara Region. However, Niagara-on-the-Lake Transit buses do not connect with Niagara Region Transit buses.

Old Town route

During the peak tourist season from May until October, buses will also operate along another route within Old Town, connecting with the buses operating to and from Niagara College at the community centre. In 2012, buses will operate along this route from Monday, May 14 until Saturday, October 13.

You’ll require an additional fare of $3 if you transfer at the community centre.

Heritage Visitor shuttle

Heritage Visitor shuttle buses continue to run between May and October. Two buses will operate along a direct route between Fort George and the courthouse parking lot in Old Town.

The tour-bus price includes Niagara-on-the-Lake Transit fares, but you’ll also need a paper transfer ticket to connect to the Old Town route or to return to Fort George.

Fares for all passengers except children younger than 5 years of age is $3 cash, exact fare. Drivers do not provide change. Kids younger than 5 ride free.

Accessibility

Each bus can accommodate two wheel-chairs or other mobility devices to increase access to disabled passengers. People who can’t board the regular buses and live within the service area can register with the Town to qualify for subsidized curb-to-curb specialized transit service.

Community shuttle

The Niagara-on-the-Lake Community Shuttle will not be part of the Town’s conventional transit system. However, Niagara Classic Transportation and Niagara Patient Transport, the operators of the community shuttle service, have committed to continue its operating the shuttle. The shuttle service is for seniors age 60 and older and students age 18 and younger who need rides. Most trips are within the Niagara-on-the-Lake area, however, residents may also ride the shuttle service’s taxis and vans to places outside the Old Town, such as hospitals. All shuttle vehicles are also wheelchair accessible.

The operators of the community shuttle are also operating the new transit service on behalf of the Town.
