Last week for free rides on YRT and Viva buses

The brief era of free transit fares for York Region Transit and Viva buses ends Sunday, April 1.

The Regional Municipality of York has offered the free rides since Saturday, February 4, to reward riders for their patience during the long strike that prevented YRT and Viva from operating buses along many routes from October until February.

The free fares have also been available to passengers riding all TTC buses serving the City of Vaughan and the Towns of Richmond Hill and Markham and GO Transit buses operating along the 69 Sutton / Newmarket route. Free fares on TTC and GO buses only apply while the buses operate inside the boundaries of York Region.

Remember, you can use Greater Toronto Area (GTA) Weekly Passess as fare on all TTC, MiWay, Brampton Transit and York Region Transit / Viva vehicles. Passengers with a GTA Pass don’t have to pay an extra fare when they’re riding a bus that crosses municipal boundaries.

Many passengers have not had to pay YRT / Viva fares since the strike started Monday, October 24. In the meantime, YRT raised the fares, starting New Year’s Day, Sunday, January 1. You can see a complete list of YRT / Viva fares here.
