Brampton's 2011 budget: transit highlights



On Wednesday, February 23, Brampton City Council approved its 2011 budget, focusing on funding programs and services that are priorities for Council and residents, while deferring spending, where possible, to future years. The 2011 City of Brampton’s current operational budget is $429.5 million and its capital budget is $215.7 million.

The overall property tax bill has three parts (Region of Peel, city and education) — the City of Brampton’s part is 40 percent. For 2011, the City must increase taxes by 4.1 percent, which increases the total tax bill by 1.6 per cent. This works out to about $61 more tax on the City part of the bill for an average house assessed at $320,000.

An tax increase of 4.1 per cent provides for a 3.1% budgetary increase to maintain current service levels and operate capital facilities and programs that Council had approved, along with a 1 per cent levy or extra charge that the City is dedicating to addressing its infrastructure deficit of $357 million.

Brampton Transit highlights include:

  • increasing service by 86,000 service hours to deliver the Main Street Züm bus rapid transit service and expanding local service to support the new and current express service
  • establishing the PRESTO fare card on all buses (later this spring);
  • building a new terminal at Shoppers World, closer to Main Street South to serve local and Züm buses.

In 2011, BT will buy 16 new Züm buses to serve the new Main Street line, 14 regular buses to expand service along routes that support the current and new Züm lines and six more local buses to expand other services.

It will also increase most fares, starting Monday, March 28 and decrease fares to just $1 for all senior Brampton residents older than 65 years of age, also starting Monday, March 28.
